80% of Potential SCOTUS Nominees on W's List Decline His Offer
Fox News | 10-11-05 | freedom4me

Posted on 10/11/2005 9:08:44 PM PDT by freedom4me

During the 11:00 p.m. (CST) newsbreak, Donna Fuducia reported that Karl Rove told James Dobson that 80% of the potential SCOTUS nominees on the President's list declined his offer because of they didn't want to undergo the grueling confirmation process. Perhaps this sheds new light on the reason why W chose Miers.

It has nothing to do with Laura Bush wanting a woman. Look at the group photo of the Justices, and with oconnor gone all you have is one female justice and I am not so sure she is even female. If ginsberg takes ill and has to leave there will be no women on the Court. Do you see the Picture this creates? Do you see the perception of a male dominated court in 2005 or 2006? We will look like the Party that just does not believe that women measure up to men. I would love to see Stevens and Ginsburg go one right after the other, and then GWB say Ok, no more trashing of nominees this is who I want or we will just run short, and that way the Republicans will have all the winning majority. This of course is after Miers is confirmed.

If his personal nominees would run from facing Teddy Kennedy and Joe Biden

Nobody is afraid of their questions. They are not interested in having every aspect of their life, every word they ever uttered, every person they rubbed the wrong way, every word of faith they have professed, etc. etc. etc. paraded through the process for the purpose of degrading their integrity and fitness. I cannot believe that anyone who has actually watched a hearing, in its entirety, would not appreciate this fact.

but it is the liberal newspapers who have been echoing the charge that O'connor's seat was the "womans seat" and therefore must be replaced with a woman.

if this spin is true (which im doubting)--bush shouldnt have listened.

I suppose all we can really do is pray.

That's one of the most sensible things I've seen posted here today.

"It seems the Katrina disaster was also affected by the president's reticence to be perceived as usurping the power of a woman governor"

I'm sorry. I never got that out of this. He was certainly affected by the actions of an incomptetent governor, but I never thought of it as being of an incompetent female governor.

Rove told Dobson that Bush had restricted the applicant pool to women. Whether liberal papers reported that, I don't know. It certainly comports with other reports in the weeks leading up to the selection.

On Prof Eugene Volokh's blog someone has done some fact-checking and discovered that of the 14 such appointments that have been made since Miers took over the job in February of this year, 11 of them were approved just a few days after she took over the job.

They were nominated months or years before she got the job.

Feminist Daily News Wire
February 15, 2005

Bush Renominates 7 Judicial Nominees Previously Blocked by Senate Democrats

On Monday, President Bush renominated seven of the ten judicial nominees that were blocked by Democratic filibusters during his first term because of their extreme right-wing records. An additional five of the 20 nominations sent to the Senate yesterday include nominees whose confirmations were slowed because of Democratic opposition to their ultra-conservative backgrounds.

Those the White House said will be renominated, the respective courts and the dates on which they were first nominated are:

Is this the best the GOP can do? Seriously? This is IT? This is really really the BEST? And I don't mean ultimate best, I mean best under the circumstances.

If so, it's all downhill from here. Because this BEST falls far short of my reasonable expecations. I've heard the salse pitch here for a week, and it falls f-l-a-t.

Amen

It's already happening in rural, and to a less degree, urbanized China.

Poor apartment dwellers being kicked out, or small home owners having their property confiscated, in order to placate the business interests of corrupt local party officials.

The resentment in rural China has grown so strong that the nominal superiors of these Communist apparatchiks, in Beijing, are starting to take notice, lest they unwittingly provoke another Tienanmen

Only this time, successful.

When will our feckless political leaders finally wake up and listen?

The RATS are completely and totally to blame for this.

It has been alleged that Harry Reid sent this nomination up through channels.

I think that may have been the caveat of some of the nominees as well.

There was a report that one person took her name out of consideration, Priscilla Owens (and we can well guess the reason she did). No other names were mentioned. Now the above vague story has been posted without reporting other names.

Until I see a report specifically naming the other candidates who withdrew, I will consider the above story, a bogus CYA story concocted by the Whitehouse to manipulate sympathy from the Republican base, many of whom are quite angry with them at the moment.

Ashcroft was a former Senator by that time. And he was confirmed, wasn't he?

Yes, 58 yea votes for a position not nearly as critical to the Democrats as the Supreme Court. Your words were shoo-in...and Santorum wouldn't be that. I mean come on...let's appreciate not just what's at stake but how this fight would actually be waged.
