Has Matt's site crashed? Haven't been able to bring it up for two or three hours.
Yeah, no problem using our MCI T-1 at work today.
I'm on RR as well here in Houston

ROAD RUNNER
|
Road Runner is currently experiencing issues with connectivity to websites hosted by Cogent. This issue is being caused by third party issues. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Just saw your posts... so there is nothing we RR customers need/can do? Just wait, yes?
Down
The most you can do is complain to your ISP so that they can put some pressure on their upstreams.
This is an intentionally created rift in the backbone of the Internet by two companies playing chicken with each other, seeing who will blink first under the weight of customer complaints. There is nothing anyone can to fix this unless the involved parties kiss and make up. Some network operators might be able to multi-home to both providers if they have the right contracts already in place and can successfully monkey their routing tables.
Yep. Just checked and the same thing is on RR MidSouth.
At least they've got it identified. This confirms tortoise's post in #75
Nope, this is a rift in the fundamental peering fabric of the Internet -- there is nothing you can do to fix it. In a sense, from the perspective of many parts of the network it would appear as though the Internet has been ripped into two separate networks. Some network operators with diverse homing points that can see both networks may be able to do some heavy-handed routing restructuring to patch it back together for their own customers, but that takes time and has a lot of nasty side-effects. But for many network operators this will not be an option and they are at the mercy of their peers.
This kind of problem is not immediately obvious, and for most network operators there was several hours of "WTF?!" until news filtered out that Cogent and Level3 had intentionally delaminated their networks.
For better or worse, I am on directly attached to the monster Silicon Valley peering fabric and the network engineers clued me in this morning. There are mailing lists on the Internet where the network engineers of all the major network operator companies argue with each other, where one can find out about these issues almost as soon as they happen.
Okay, this is not acceptable to me. Exactly who do we need to jump up and down on to get this problem fixed?
So don't you think this would be big news in the media?
But also if what you say is true then how come some people can get to FR but not drudge. And yet some people can obviously get to both?(Judging from prior comments)
I mean there should not be one person posting here that can veiw drudge right ?
Is there a list somewhere of the websites we might have problems with? I am having trouble getting to quite a few, now that I am looking. For instance, I cannot reach Tinyurl.com (another site similar to photobucket). If this is going to be an ongoing problem, I just might have to change providers.
Based on what he is saying... If you could get those sites then you could not view FR. Obviously some people can view both. Maybe some ISP's are bridging the gap. But in any case would you rather be able to get to a photo site or to FR ?
LOL
yeah, I do the client architecture for a Fortune 100 company, so I'm aware of the resources you mention. However, it's not my problem, so I tend to avoid those things unless forced to ;^>
We just outsourced our telecom/digital network to a major firm (who will remain nameless) but it's still mostly the same people, just with different ID cards to get into our data center. I heard them bitching about something, but knew I really didn't want to get in the middle of it.
Where in the valley are you? I spent 77 to 82 way up in Pacifica/Daly City when it was all really starting to hit and my Dad and my sister and her family live down in Palo Alto. I just spent several weeks out there at the end of May, beginning of June, first for the Gartner conference, but then had to return when my Mom passed away.
Kind of a hard way to go back to the old haunts. At least I got to spend one last perfect weekend with my folks.
If it was just one photo site, then there wouldn't be a problem, but as I am going thru my bookmarks, I have so far found 11 sites that I use regularly that I am unable to reach tonight, including a site that my children use for their homework all the time. I am not willing to sacrifice that.
Anyway, for me, its less about drudge and FR and more about paying top dollar for an internet connection that no longer satisfies my needs as a consumer. If RR wants my money, they will have to do better than this.
The ENTIRE internet has been funky today..and some of yesterday. I work from my home office and use the net all day- today I was unable to process simple tasks- I would be halfway through something and the screen would go dlank- lost connections all over- pages I use constantly wouldn't load..etc.
Talked to a guru friend who suggested one of two things- 1) Sunspots or 2) voodoo ghosts let loose in NOLA.
It's been this way everywhere- with everyone I speak with and I'm surprised it's not making any news out there...
It looks like the problem has been fixed.
