October 5, 2005 -- THE producer at the center of last year's "Memogate" scandal at CBS News says she was derailed by a vast right-wing conspiracy.
The producer, Mary Mapes, is one of four CBS staffers fired last January in the wake of the scandal.
She is convinced she was the victim of a group of loosely associated Internet bloggers "with a harsh political bent" who pounced on CBS News minutes after the airing of the now-infamous Texas Air National Guard story on "60 Minutes 2" in September 2004...
"Within a few minutes, I was online visiting Websites I had never heard of before: Free Republic, Little Green Footballs, Power Line," writes Mapes...
"They were hard-core, politically angry, hyperconservative sites loaded with vitriol about Dan Rather and CBS."
"This was something else, something new and fundamentally frightening," Mapes writes. "I had never seen this kind of response to any story.
"It dawned on me that I was present at the birth of a political jihad."

FWIW, Viacom(mie) owns Simon & Schuester (publisher of Hillary's autobiography about details she "couldn't remember") as well as SeeBS and eMpTyV, home of Rock The Vote, Choose Or Lose, and round the clock every 10 minute updates about "Bush's draft".

THIS was her downfall. If she had been in the business for this long and not heard of these sites it is obvious she was a VERY POOR researcher. If you weren't aware of us or little green footballs, by then your were doomed before you put the paper in the typerwriter.Yep. What she just admitted was that she was living in a bubble, unaware of what had been going on around her for some time. Not a good thing for someone responsible for pullilng together all of the "facts" for her news stories.

With every word she utters, every shot she takes at people, she demonstrates that she has no respect for the truth.
That is what her problem is.

This idiot is also admitting that she and others like her arrogantly assumed they could ignore Free Republic and other right-leaning news focus sites. By doing so, they didn't exist and if they didn't exist for them, they didn't exist for anyone else that counted. It was a shock to realize that "those sites" had an impact that could shoot down their propaganda. Chuckle, chuckle...

I was thinking the same thing. These people are so out of touch, it is unbelievable! They've created their own little world to live in, safe and sound, where they are always right. Isn't it funny- how these folks are always referring to the 'radical right', 'right-wing extremists', 'hyperconservatives', and such, but there is no analog on the other side of the spectrum? When was the last time anybody heard some breathless, fearmongering report about 'left-wing radicals'?
You'd think that if the MSM were really the centrists that they portray themselves to be, you'd at least hear a passing mention, at some point.
And they wonder why nobody watches them anymore.

Everytime a liberal cries, an angel gets its wings. Laughing as I am at this idiot (Mapes) and the great responses to the idiot, I must say that if liberals didn't exist, it would be necessary to invent them.

Can't you just see Mary and Dan sitting there saying "What's happening? I thought when campaign finance reform was passed, that we could get away with this!"

It should dawn on her that she was present at the death of a political jihad - her own.

Can't these people get it right. This is a Crusade, not a Jihad. The Daily Kos, DU and all of the other pro-Palestinian groups launch Jihads.
