WASHINGTON -- Senators beginning what ought to be a protracted and exacting scrutiny of Harriet Miers should be guided by three rules. First, it is not important that she be confirmed. Second, it might be very important that she not be. Third, the presumption -- perhaps rebuttable but certainly in need of rebutting -- should be that her nomination is not a defensible exercise of presidential discretion to which senatorial deference is due.

Then why is it that when another user posted a comment to the effect that Harriet Miers was "more qualified" to serve in this capacity than Hillary Clinton, no one came forward to challenge this blatantly inaccurate assertion?
I yield to no one in my contempt for HRC, but when I read that comment my stomach turned.
When did being a conservative become synonymous with scrupulously adhering to the agenda put forth by the Republican Party, or countenancing statements that you knew for a fact to be false?
Bush has gained a slight increase in support from African-Americans during his presidency. Although he only got 9% of the black vote in 2000, he received 12% in 2004, with the increased black vote in Ohio giving the victory to Bush over Kerry.Source: Wikipedia
And Paul O'Neill.
And Judge Richard Gregory.
For example...
Probably, given that Roberts was an "unknown quantity" until after his 22 hours of testimony in front of the world.
Given how the Republicans won't go to bat for this administration, fighting the fights that matter most, one would think the Democrats control it today.
You really need to back off JUST a bit.
That vocabulary should not be at issue when we are talking about filling out one ninth of the most powerful branch of government.
This is not dog-catcher, it's not Director of the OMB, it's not even the Secretary of State.
It is the Supreme Court!
How many times do we need to emphasize that before the gravity of this situation begins to sink in?
The mere fact that this nomination has provoked a debate among people who should be on the same page on this issue-if nothing else-should tell you something.
You've been mighty busy today trashing this president.
Thank you George Will. Can't speak for anyone else, but it's impossible for me to support this nominee and like Will, I hope she's defeated. However that's of course highly unlikely. Bush will have enough Democratic votes to handily overcome any core conservative revolt on this one. Oh well, I guess we can't have everything. Hopefully the negative political implications of the discord he's wrought in the base, will improve GWB's selection process if Stevens' seat opens.
Miers may be a stealth nominee for those Bork jockies who want to find that one flaw that will torpedoe President Bush's choice. I am sure our opponents in this great culture war have gone over the obvious nominees with a fine tooth comb. With Miers choice, President Bush has thrown a wrench into the strategy of the DemonRATs (I will only call Zell Miller a Democrat). By the time they have started to find something, the hearings will have been over.
This niminee was one of strategy. The Republicans have 51 Senators. Many of them cannot be trusted to hold firm to a down to the line fight which would have occured with any of the known contenders. President Bush was not going to put a nominee in that kind of jeapardy--not when the DemonRATs had vowed to put this next nominee through the grinder as payback for the defeat they suffered with the Roberts victory. With this tactic working, the President decided that it is one he can win with. Now those Republicans in the Senate will not have to face any serious embarassment from the DemonRATs who are known to Bork nominees on such things as pubic hair on Coke cans. Now the DemonRATs risk criticism
We are all dying to see to see the judicial reveiew and activism come to an end. We all have that in common I think. I don't see that happening if the base rips apart on something like this. It requires patience and lots and lots of baby steps.
Yes, I want that tangible reassurance of the paper trail. Yes, I definitely want to know more. I can deal with the wait for now, knowing that nothing worthwhile is ever easy.
The notion that any prospective replacement will be any better is unreasonably optimistic, to say the least.
Even a withdrawal of the nomination-which would have been the best possible outcome of this process-is unlikely.
I'll say it once again.
The damage has already been done.
Period, end of sentence.
Wow, you are so right; I hadn't even thought of it, but by this time after naming Roberts, the damning TV ads had already been on the air for 24 hours!
I'd reserve judgement before launching into blind accusations as "weak". Because you can't know more about her than Ms. Miers or President Bush himself.
Because the assertion is true?
They're not lifetime appointees Einstein.
"Why does it seem Evangelical/Religious Right groups are supporting Miers and "Intellectual" Conservatives are not?"
I started noticing this pattern yesterday too...
You've made my case better than I could have ever hoped to.
The entire pro-Miers argument is redolent of defeatism.
