Count Ann Coulter among the conservatives who are unhappy with President Bush’s nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court.
Asked by NewsMax.com if she considers Miers to be what she had called John Roberts after his nomination - a "tabula rasa” - Coulter, who’s now out with the paperback edition of her best-seller "How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must),” said:
"No. She’s something new: a complete mediocrity.”
Ouch.
Well, to me, the failure of having a sane border policy, and nominating two unknowns adds up to three strikes for Bush, Jr. Somehow both Bush men seem to start the job right but dont follow through.....A sad day. Even Reed from NV likes her! Egads!
How many chances have Republican Presidents throw away in submitting such persons? Will the Pubbies EVER grow cajones??
Ms Brown, a staunch conservative, would have wacked the comlib left...she's smart, conservative, a woman, and a minority!
Ever heard of Mona Charen? She's an incisive conservative commentator. But she's married with kids, and looks a little matronly.
I have no doubt that Coulter is where she is largely because she always puts a picture of herself on the front of her books.
I've been here seven years, and I've never seen such a pathetic curl-up-into-the-fetal-position as I've seen here today.
Quite devout, actually. And from what I've learned, she is very generous and charitable.
If there is a question of her commitment to moral principle, ask about her heading of a gambling operation, lottery, and efforts to grow that operation. Ask why she didn't resign from the ABA when it crammed a pro-choice resolution into effect. First as a resoultion, per se, and then as a resolution unsupported by the full membership as the Texas Bar advocated.
I'll say this though about her charity - she appears to put her money and her time where her heart is. She tithes, and gives her time to help those who aren't "making it" for whatever reason. She walks the talk on compassionate conservatism.
That sums it up pretty well.

"Coulter clerked for the Honorable Pasco Bowman II of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and was an attorney in the Department of Justice Honors Program for outstanding law school graduates.
"After practicing law in private practice in New York City, Coulter worked for the Senate Judiciary Committee, where she handled crime and immigration issues for Senator Spencer Abraham of Michigan. From there, she became a litigator with the Center For Individual Rights in Washington, DC, a public interest law firm dedicated to the defense of individual rights with particular emphasis on freedom of speech, civil rights, and the free exercise of religion.

Miers was an SMU graduate who also had law review experience. She went on to clerk for a federal district court judge.
Miers has executive experience that Coulter does not have, but the position is SCOTUS associate justice is not an executive position.
On balance, comparing Miers to Coulter, I would tend to agree that from a conservative perspective and based partly on her younger age for purposes of length of tenure, Coulter would have been a better pick.

Because being a devout Christian does not automatically qualify someone for serving on the Supreme Court.
Because being a devout Christian does not automatically make one embrace conservatism -- there are plenty of devout Christian liberals.
Because being a devout Christian is not a reliable litmus test, although you apparently think it is.

Today, President Bush announced his choice to succeed Justice Sandra Day O'Connor as the next Supreme Court Justice: Harriet Miers. Ms. Miers is the third woman to be nominated for the Supreme Court, and like Justice O'Connor is a legal trailblazer. Ms. Miers is an extremely well-qualified and fair-minded individual who is committed to interpreting the law instead of legislating from the bench.
President Bush selected Ms. Miers after embarking on a thorough and deliberate thought process. This confirmation however promises to be much more contentious than the confirmation of Judge John Roberts. Before Ms. Miers was even announced many Democrat groups said they would oppose her. They have no interest in giving Ms. Miers a fair hearing or vote. They are promising to throw every punch, make every accusation and pressure every Senator to oppose this nominee no matter what her qualifications may be. We have to be prepared to counter their actions and that is why Harriet Miers needs your help.
To ensure Ms. Miers is confirmed by the U.S. Senate, I need you to do three things.
1. Call your Senators. Tell them Harriet Miers has your support and deserves theirs.
2. Sign our petition in support of the timely confirmation of Harriet Miers.
3. Call talk radio, write a letter to the editor of your local paper and tell your friends and neighbors why you support the President's choice.

In the coming years and decades, the decisions the Supreme Court makes will greatly affect all of our lives. With all due respect, someone says that each time the Republicans, namely the President, sells out.
And the Federalist Society. Oh, and people who know her well, like Senators John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison.
It's not a bad choice; it's a choice you don't agree with. That's all.
Here's the roblem. In the next few weeks, things will come out (and have already begun to come out that would confirm our worst fears about Miers - and the left's worst fears about Miers. And 95% of it won't mean crap as to how she will judge.
There's a fundamental difference between being a lawyer and being a judge. A lawyer speaks in the interest of their client, whether they hold that belief or not. A judge chooses (interprets, if you perfer) what laws apply to a case and what to make of those laws. One has little to do with the other.
We on the right are worried about another Souter, Kennedy or O'Connor. We cringe to see Harry Reid and Schmucky Schumer high-fiving each other over the announcement.
Those on the left are worried because she has followed Bush's coattails and anything that has the taint of Bush is taboo to the left.
Truth is, neither one knows which one she's going to be because she never been a judge. I'm guessing she'll wind up somewhere between Souter and Kennedy but mamybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.
At least she's 60 so she won't stay more than 20 years.
The President went nowhere near a battle with this one.
She's shrill and ill-mannered.
Hell, she has no syndication any longer, and has to sponge off people like David Horowitz to get her columns published.
She's too much of a bomb-thrower to be taken seriously by most people.
