The explosion happened at the courtyard near the George Lynn Cross Hall, Botany-Microbiology Building on OU's campus, which is west of the stadium, according to Sgt. Gary Robinson of the University police department. The explosion happened during the second quarter of Oklahoma's game against Kansas State. After the explosion, police set up a perimeter of several blocks and made fans exit the stadium to the east.
NORMAN -- An explosion near the University of Oklahoma's Gaylord Family-Memorial Stadium killed one person Saturday, OU officials said.
And, may I add, it being Oklahoma with the 92 connection...if this was a Muslim this story will go for quite a while.
Thank you, I'm late to this thread and the story. You answered all my questions that I unfortunately posted a minute before getting to your post. :)
No, I'm not joking. I imagine muslims get depressed and kill themselves without taking others with them, occasionally. Not saying it is likely, but without any other information, we cannot prove anything.
If it is terrorism, I would imagine at least one or two accomplices will come to light.
Only thing I heard on the radio coming home from the game was a guy on a sports channel saying he had a hard time getting out because of the suicide bomber. That was it -- no speculation -- same thing on all the news channels. Best article was in the headline of the Norman Transcript which was posted here but haven't seen an update.
Search PhiKapMom's posts. She has one of the boots on the ground.
You are correct. They did not die from a bomb blast. Next?
I believe some folks in the know said the wallet or at least part of it would probably be intact, IF this person was carrying one. Mike, is that so?
--I have one to add which was confirmed. Some of the campus Parkview Apartments (about two blocks from the stadium) were evacuated and searched.---
Lot of trouble for a suicide investigation.
"I have one to add which was confirmed. Some of the campus Parkview Apartments (about two blocks from the stadium) were evacuated and searched."
The link I posted to the Emergency Plan for OU has the number of the Parkview Apartments on it. Maybe someone could call the apartment manager and get some info tomorrow. Might be interesting.
"why is a lone suicidal student working with 2 explosives?"
one possiblity is this person was a crappy mechanic, and it broke into pieces, then part of it detonated. (this assumes there was only one device, of course)
There are, of course, many other possibilities. We'll see which one it was, eventually. (I hope.)
Thanks, will do.
I'm not apologizing for anyone. I don't even know what happened except that someone blew himself up.
Who would have thought that young teens would shoot up their classmates at school before the first time one went and did it? People do weird things.
This could well be terrorism and if it is, I think the media silence is b/c they are trying to flush out an accomplice.
Not taking anyone with them? Can't get no virgins that way!
Sounds like they searched the residence of the deceased. Which would mean they know his identity.
They knew his identity and plan to give him a new one.
Not at all. The media reported all sorts of hysteria after Katrina which turned out to be false. If it is terrorism, I think the authorities want it to look like a lone kook to flush out any acomplices.
Sorry if this has been posted--I just skimmed over the last 300 posts, from my leisurely reading since this morning.

UPDATE: Joel Hinricks, 21, engineering junior, is the identity released at the press conference as the suicide bomber.
UPDATE: 4 p.m. - The FBI took over as the lead agency investigating the bombing Saturday during the OU football game against Kansas State. Three buses have been wiped down and sprayed, clearing the remains of the suicide bomber. The buses are still parked on the South Oval.
The scene is very calm right now. Children and former OU head football coach Barry Switzer were biking around the South Oval. A policeman is still stationed near a small 6-by-1 ft. roped-off area in front of G.L. Cross Hall, but all other areas that were blocked following the game are now open.
Catherine Bishop, vice president for Public Affairs, confirmed this afternoon that as of 1:45 p.m., classes will still be held Monday.
More information will be available following a 4 p.m. press conference. Scooby Axson
3: 15 p.m. Today OU President David L. Boren released a second statement Sunday confirming that there was no second device. Early reports that there was a second device were incorrect. The second detonation was the bomb squad making sure there was no second device in the area.
OUDaily.com has also learned that as of 3:15 p.m. Sunday, class will be held Monday as scheduled. More information will be posted here as it becomes available. -Althea Peterson
One person was killed Saturday night in an explosion during the second quarter of the OU/Kansas State game.
OU police Sgt. Gary Robinson said: "We heard a loud explosion outside the stadium, a device was exploded. We have one fatality and we have the area sectioned off. We are checking to see if there are any devices."
The explosion occurred in the courtyard east of G.L. Cross Hall, Robinson said.
He said after the area was cleared of any other possible devices the police would check on other injuries.
"We're letting the hazardous device units do what they do," Robinson said.
Robinson said after the game fans would be let out on the east side of the stadium towards Jenkins Avenue. During half time fans were not allowed to leave the stadium on the west side.

There is also local feedback, which I haven't read yet--haven't even read all of this yet, but saw that the perp has been ID'ed.
Did you not say earlier that a number of ME types (Petro Engr students or such at OU) live in the Parkview Apts?
It's not what you say, it's how you say it. Notice this "old timer" hasn't been ugly with you. I have no problem with your premise. I do have a problem with how you want to shove it down folks throats. However, I see that you have backed off a bit and started communicating more. That's commendable. Now, whether you care what I think is another thing. You probably shouldn't. I like your spunk. If you want respect you have to earn it. Again, I don't know if you care. And it doesn't matter to me or most on here if you do. I get the feeling, though, you don't want to be thought of as a yipping dog nipping at others' heels.
