From Staff Reports
NORMAN -- An explosion near the University of Oklahoma's Gaylord Family-Memorial Stadium killed one person Saturday, OU officials said.

The explosion happened at the courtyard near the George Lynn Cross Hall, Botany-Microbiology Building on OU's campus, which is west of the stadium, according to Sgt. Gary Robinson of the University police department.

The explosion happened during the second quarter of Oklahoma's game against Kansas State.

After the explosion, police set up a perimeter of several blocks and made fans exit the stadium to the east.

Heh. Well, I *am* a Texan Sooner, which is about as bad as it gets. Have lived with the razzing for many years--but the past few have made it OK.

But, hey, your football players sound just like *ours*! And you're right about the Lawrencians--I grew up in a nest of 'em in NE OK.

What I loved about Manhattan were the buffalo steaks!

I talked to my son and he was told that she has been talking to some of the authorities since my daughter and I left the area after the game and walking the real long way back to the frat house.

It was great! Last year they honored LeRoy Selmon when S. Florida was here for a game. Stoops has done a great job of bringing back players from the past.

The scanner must have been buzzing. I think every Norman cop was on the scene from the number of lights flashing.

But the only time I ever had a potential "rumble" happen, in which I was in bodily danger, was in the ladies' room (and I *am* one) in Manhattan during an OU-KSU game. I was decked out, as always, head to toe in my Sooners red cowboy hat and red cowboy boots, shirt, jeans, temp tattoos, the whole nine yards. I also had a small boombox with a tape of Boomer Sooner in it. I handed off the stereo to my friend when I went inside a stall - she turned it on to play the song - and then all hell broke loose.

You went into the other team's stadium and started blaring out a tape of your fight song in the restroom? How incredibly obnoxious. While I don't condone violence, you can't be shocked that you'd get a negative reaction.

For a long time, my family had season tickets on the 50-yd line about 30 rows up, and during the Selmon boys' years, their parents sat a few rows down in front of us. They were so proud!

I didn't say *I* blared the fight song. My *friend*--the lawyer--did it. I don't go around doing things like that.

If I *had* listened to the game tonight (and jinxed them from winning, lol), and then found out afterwards that this had happened, I'd be whistling the theme from "Twilight Zone" right about now.

Face it folks, this was the dry run.....

Real explosives, and a person splattered around in little pieces. Not what I would call a "dry" run.

I wonder if the "five hurt" includes that bus driver who was knocked down but "otherwise unhurt," according to the OU fan on the scene. If not, maybe these are somewhat more serious injuries. Hope we find something out soon.

Is there a way for the authorities to jam all cellphones in a distinct area, so as to prevent the detonation of more bombs by cellphone?

Cell phones only work were there are cell phone towers, all you have to do is shut down nearer cell towers, and I'm sure the TelCos can do that remotely. Cell phones only "talk" to the towers, not directly to each other.

Here's what I was thinking of, by the way, and there was a letter, too, I believe. Still looking for that.

I find it interesting that I was hundreds of miles to the south at a Big 12 football game and was unable to use my phone (svc unavailable) from about 7:30 p.m. to about 8 p.m.

If you were at UT, it's not suprising the cell phones would not work. I attended the UT NU game a couple of years ago and it took me many tries to get out. I've also had trouble just driving by on I-35 when there was game at UT, all the way from about the south 290 intersection to the 183 split on the north.

I was in Eufala, OK, over a month ago at a State GOP picnic. That small town had the Selmon Brothers and J.C. Watts.

Dewey's daughter graduated from high school here in Norman the same year my son did. I sat beside Dewey at the Norman Athletic Association Meetings and didn't realize it was one of the Selmon Brothers at first. Really down to earth people.

Those tickets would be gold now with so many people on the waiting list.
