I have interviewed Harriet Miers over the years. She spent some time on Dallas City Council which is a perpetual zone of political chaos and dysfunction. However, she seemed to be pretty much a straight shooter. Intelligent and in command. Certainly no Lib.
However, she was also head of the Texas Bar Association. Very much the legal scholar and certainly no idealogue. She gave little indication as to what her personal views contained.
Like many Texans she was a Dem who saw the light. Rick Perry , our Governor and his GOP challenger,State Treasurer Carole Keaton Strayhorn, were also long time Dems.
Having said all of this, this is a stealth candidate. My observations indicate Miers is NO CONSERVATIVE. I have no idea of what her stances are when it comes to Social Issues, including Roe V. Wade, but if I had to guess, I'd tell you she is a "Squish." Very much in the O'Connor mode. She's Jewish. So not likely to be a member of the "Religious Right."
I'd take all of this with a grain of salt. Remember, the media told us it was Edith Clement. It was a false head feint. I hope it's the case this time because this looks to be a choice Bush has made to reward a loyal friend and employee and not to fulfill his campaign promise to nominate more "Scalias." Very sharp and very decent human being. However, this would come as a major dissapointment to Conservatives.
Others will have much more background on Miers than I do. These memories go back more than ten to fifteen years. However, this looks like a "finessed" choice. Someone with little paper trail on important issues and no Judicial experience.

LOL. SMU stopped being "Methodist" many years ago. Lots of everything at SMU. University Of Miami, Syracuse U. were founded as Methodist schools, too, I believe. Means nothing.
