This is a recent post by Erick on ConfirmThem.com blog (a project of RedState.org):
Word in legal circles is that Priscilla Owen is set to become the next justice appointed to the United States Supreme Court.
Unfortunately, I have received reliable information late this afternoon that Karl Rove, among others, is making a last minute push for the President to consider Alberto Gonzales, despite previous assurances from inside the White House, Justice Department, and Senate that Gonzales was not being considered.
A third party source tells RedState that Rove is pushing for Gonzales and that Larry Thompsons name has gone off the radar. This afternoon I contacted my White House source who says Karl Rove believes that Gonzales is conservative and, given the current docket, will have time to prove it before midterm elections.
The source says it is not a guarantee and there are significant issues at play including confirmability. I have no word on other names, other than the usual that are already out there.
Looks like Im going to be headed to the driving range soon.
One last point from my White House source. The source says some conservatives inside the White House, including the source, feel some conservative frustration, i.e. conservatives are being seen, but not heard.
Is he? What's the evidence that he is?
If indeed it is the White House disseminating these endless rumors about Gonzales, then they need not be surprised if conservatives continue to call, email, post and blog about Gonzales being unacceptable.
As you say, the White House may not care one whit ... but I do recall it getting under the President's skin at least once during the last go round.
It's disgraceful that Gonzales is even being considered. It shows the utter lack of principle within this administration. There is no excuse for an open originalist in the Scalia-Thomas mold not to be appointed.
Another maybe or liberal like Gonzales will assure the court remains on its leftward course for a generation.
We should settle for nothing less than someone like Edith Jones. She even meets the proper diversity qualifications.
Sounds like someone is trying to get the base all roiled up.
With the announcement drawing near, the Gonzales talk may be designed to gin down conservative expectations so that when the choice is actually ... say, Karen Williams ... she will seem like the second coming of Bork.
Lets just give Thomas or Scalia Two Votes.
Montag to Rove: STFU
Erick Erickson is a rumor-mongering gossip who has no sources whatsoever inside the White House.
Bookmark this thread to more fully discredit him when the actual pick is named (and isn't gonzalez).
Nope. Poppy and Barb probably would say "she's too MEAN"
To the Bushes, it is better to lose than to win by being "mean".
Usually cited are his rulings on parental notification for minor abortions while on the Texas Supreme Court and his position on affirmative action while Attorney General.
My thought is, he is probably a good man and fairly conservative to boot. I don't like to see him unfairly demonized.
But most conservatives have a pretty strong feeling that he is nowhere near a Scalia or Thomas.

I don't think one exists.
Hey, South ... those are pretty strong words. Do you know Erick?
"Speedy Gonzales,
Why don't you go home!"
LOL! This is the first I've ever heard of Erick Erickson.
The Dems already Borked one excellent hispanic candidate.
I agree with that. President Bush has indicated that he is hopeful the Senate will perfrom its advise & consent function, and his comment was phrased in such a way that he does not take an up or down vote as a gimme.
I don't believe President Bush will make another SCOTUS nomination until the Roberts nomination is disposed of. And then, as you note, he's likely to wait a few days after that before making the name of his next SCOTUS nomination public.
Go back to drinking the Kool Aid as government spending explodes and we get more stealth maybes that won't change the direction of the Supreme Court.
