Karl Rove to POTUS: Put Gonzales on the Court
ConfirmThem.com ^ | September 26, 2005 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 09/26/2005 11:20:16 AM PDT by Oliver Optic

This is a recent post by Erick on ConfirmThem.com blog (a project of RedState.org):

Word in legal circles is that Priscilla Owen is set to become the next justice appointed to the United States Supreme Court.

Unfortunately, I have received reliable information late this afternoon that Karl Rove, among others, is making a last minute push for the President to consider Alberto Gonzales, despite previous assurances from inside the White House, Justice Department, and Senate that Gonzales was not being considered.

A third party source tells RedState that Rove is pushing for Gonzales and that Larry Thompson’s name has gone off the radar. This afternoon I contacted my White House source who says Karl Rove “believes that Gonzales is conservative and, given the current docket, will have time to prove it before midterm elections.”

The source says it is not a guarantee and there are significant issues at play — including confirmability. I have no word on other names, other than the usual that are already out there.

Looks like I’m going to be headed to the driving range soon.

One last point from my White House source. The source says some conservatives inside the White House, including the source, feel some “conservative frustration,” i.e. conservatives are being seen, but not heard.

ConfirmThem.com reports, you decide.

With the announcement only a day or two away, the rumor mill is cranking up again.

In the end, I think Rove and the President will show better sense than this.

What leads you to that conclusion?

I have been away from news for a few days.

The Roberts vote is scheduled for Thursday (I think.) Do you expect this announcement to come before then?

Geeez, with Edith Jones a *Conservative* and a women from the *new orleans* Circuit court, you have a Roberts-like resume and a top-tier candidate that would be hard for the Senate to say no to ... yet they are grasping for second-tier 'chums' like Gonzalez, that Conservatives have *already said* "NO THANKS" too.

Are they NUTS?

Al "La Raza" Gonzalez? With his ties to the ultra left-win "La Raza" group?
Karl needs to get out more.

Hi, Izzy --

There are a couple of posts on RedState/ConfirmThem this morning indicating that the President's announcement will be this week and perhaps even before Roberts' confirmation.

"RedState’s sources tell us to expect a Presidential announcement any day concerning Sandra Day O’Connor’s replacement. With a vote coming very soon on Roberts, many Republican senators and White House staffers expect the President to make his announcement soon."

No clone, but a fraternal twin - Janice Rogers Brown, originalist, conservative, from the south, and African American.

Dont expect to be so lucky that they'd actually nominate her.

This Gonzales crap is getting so old.

It isn't going to be Gonzales but on the left we have the media pushing for him and on the right we have people suggesting it will be him in order to try and prevent it.

Gonzales is only going to be nominated to the Court if it is near the end of the President's term and it is to replace someone like Ginsberg or Stevens.

Rove cannot be this stupid. As a matter of fact, I thought he was a pretty smart boy.

Problems with the AG.

    1. Conflict of interest issues - recusal.
    2. Tough hearing in January which leads to.
    3. Appointment causes AG vacancy inviting yet another tough confirmation battle.
    4. Gonzalez is probably not an authentic conservative. Probably would draw GOP votes against confirmation.

I think this is disinformation. Redstate and Confirmthem are interesting reads but I think the WH is deliberately using them to plant this disinfo. I think W knows exactly who he is going to nominate and if it were me, I would use Roberts' swearing in to nominate the next Justice.

I sure hope NOT. I can't believe that the give in to pressure to put a "minority" just to please the crowd. I rather see a strong conservative. Heck If Hillary get in, we are seeing conservative judges "retiring" and replaced with liberals .

The "right" rumor mill often turns out to be worse than the "left" rumor mill. The last nomination was all but guaranteed to be a woman by everyone in the know.

I'm just going to start bookmarking these reports. Then throw them back in the faces of those that claimed inside sources the day he makes the announcement. We'll see if they stand proud or have egg on their faces.

I truly respect that this President has the wisdom to ignore someone incapable of speaking without a) curses b) believes whatever rumor hits the mill.

I'll be surprised if Gonzales is named. The president is well aware of what the base is expecting, and it's not Gonzales. Karl Rove isn't the genius, evil or otherwise that folks think he is either if this is the advice he is giving.

Agreed. The more Priscilla Owen's name gets bandied about, the surer I am that she's never going to get the nomination.
