After Hurricane Katrina, Democrats and lib-left media dumped all over U.S. President George W. Bush -- charging that he failed to do his job in the disaster.
Yesterday, after Hurricane Rita had hit Texas and Louisiana and moved inland, no one was blaming Bush. In fact, the Democrats and commentators were trying to ignore the first-class job he and his administration had done to head off what could have been a disaster.
By late yesterday, not a single fatality had been blamed on Hurricane Rita itself -- although 24 evacuees had died the day before in a tragic bus accident.
And where was the president? Why, he was at the Colorado air base that had been turned into the command headquarters for the U.S. forces fighting the hurricane. And he promptly showed he was in command:
"Our federal government is well organized and well prepared to deal with Rita. The first order of business now is search-and-rescue teams -- to pull people out of harm's way."
But he cautioned people not to hurry back to their homes: "The situation is still dangerous because of flooding. It's important for them to listen to the local authorities about whether or not it is safe for them to return to their homes."
In other words, Bush was urging continued co-operation between the three levels of government -- federal, state and municipal in the massive anti-hurricane battle. So far, good co-operative work had obviously paid off in the saving of lives.
Later yesterday Bush flew to Austin headquarters for Texas' emergency operations, and then on to San Antonio, where many evacuees were living. He will be visiting other hurricane-affected areas throughout the weekend.
Meanwhile, those who spent so much effort trying to blame everything that went wrong in the Hurricane Katrina tragedy on Bush were keeping very silent profiles when it came to giving him credit in his highly competent handling of Rita.
Hopefully, the lack of damage remains the same for the huge concentration of Texas and Louisiana oil wells and refineries that seemed to escape the main brunt of the hurricane. One of the weird ironies of the days leading up to Rita coming ashore was the rumour-fuelled panic that affected the Toronto area.
Out of nowhere, motorists were driving around like chickens with their heads cut off, warning that prices were going to shoot over $2 a litre. Suddenly there were lineups of cars at local service stations, filling up on gas that exceeded $1.
And where was Prime Minister Paul Martin and his federal Liberal regime? Well, how about doing little or nothing to head off the panic and trying to lower prices. And where was the PM yesterday? He was in Prince Edward Island, looking at the site of a new Canadian Wind Energy Institute. It will build windmills to produce electricity and the government has promised it $3.6 million.
Actually, that's not much money when you realize that the Martin government has so overtaxed Canadians that it has piled up a whopping $7.1-billion tax surplus from April through July. That's nearly double what it was last year.
There's a big difference between Canada's incompetent Liberal government and the U.S. administration run by George W. Bush.
Martin's Canadian one just keeps fumbling along, overtaxing and wasting our hard-earned money. Meanwhile, Bush forges ahead to do the right thing as he sees it. No matter what the critics say.

Blanco was taking all the credit for the smooth way things went in La this time. She never mentioned the fact that she refused help from Bush the first time. When Geraldo started to get a little too close to what went wrong before Katrina, she started getting agitated and threw a little dig at Bush and Gov Perry. But of course she is above all the finger pointing. sarc/off
I was surfing the channels tonight. Geraldo had some very good stories from Port Arthur where he interviewed the mayor. The mayor's house burned down. No blame game.
He blamed no one. The Lt. Gov. of Texas spoke of how well the people of Texas were handling the aftermath of Rita. He spoke of people speaking of the blessings coming out of the tragedy. No blame game.
The police chief of Lake Charles, LA (on CNN was very positive. He said looters would be jailed and/or chained to plumbing if necessary. No blame game.
On MSNBC was a show called the blame game or something like it. They spent the whole time blaming others for the problems in NOLA.
It seems to me that competent and responsible officials in other parts of the area have done their jobs well. Nagin, Blanco, and Landrieu all blew it and now want everyone else to pay the price for their inaction and stupidity.
As a displaced Texan, I am proud of my home state and its can do approach. Sure beats LA.

I'll say! The Texas officials I saw were calm, organized, and far from the hysterical fools in LA who were threatening to hit Pres. Bush, crying, or demanding Greyhound busses. It may be they took a lesson from LA - after all, everyone can be an example, if only a BAD example - or it may be they are good leaders. Kudos to them, in either case.
So I guess now every hurricane from now on, all dozens of them over 5 years will necessitate entire evacutations of the entire coast?
Seems a bit nuts to me. But, that's what the media has made Katrina into.
He better take a big box to work tomorrow, to gather up his belongings. I suspect a pink slip will be taped to his office door.
The mayor of Galveston has been outstanding in front of the national media as well.
The most amazing thing to me was 2.5 million people leaving Houston, even if I-45 was a parking lot, they were gone in record time.
