The Last Sentence: "Bush forges ahead to do the right thing as he sees it. No matter what the critics say".
To: bobsunshine
Meanwhile, those who spent so much effort trying to blame everything that went wrong in the Hurricane Katrina tragedy on Bush were keeping very silent profiles when it came to giving him credit in his highly competent handling of Rita.
Remember the traffic jammed up on the highway getting out of Texas? THAT was Bush's fault. /sarc

I think everyone is beginning to figure out that Bush bashing is just a childish pastime for those who don't take life seriously.
It will really be over when the world figures out just how scary this world is going to be when his term ends.

Success? But the hurricane didn't even really hit Houston. All those people evacuated? He screwed up big time.
I bet you're looking for the sarcasm tag, aren't you? ;-)

Blanco was taking all the credit for the smooth way things went in La this time. She never mentioned the fact that she refused help from Bush the first time. When Geraldo started to get a little too close to what went wrong before Katrina, she started getting agitated and threw a little dig at Bush and Gov Perry. But of course she is above all the finger pointing. sarc/off

So I guess now every hurricane from now on, all dozens of them over 5 years will necessitate entire evacutations of the entire coast?
Seems a bit nuts to me. But, that's what the media has made Katrina into.

Full credit should go to Bush

As a person that lost TWO HOMES and ONE BUSINESS in Katrina, I can tell you that the President's and the Feds response to helping us here in Mississippi has been MAGNIFICENT! Any other conclusion is 100% BOVINE EXCREMENT!!!
I KNOW, as I SURVIVED that bitch Katrina!!!

Good article, but the reality is, politicians are getting too much credit or blame either way.
Those who successfully evacuated, whether they needed to or not, did so because they saw had a recent, very grim, reminder, of what could happen if they didn't (not the social breakdown, but the deaths/problems from the flooding - I couldn't see a New Orleans-style social breakdown happening in Texas).
There is also the fact that the hurricane veered away from Houston - had it hit Houston head on, with God knows how many people trying to get out (the people who waited to see where it was going to hit, plus the people already stuck), people would be blaming President Bush, even though he has no control over it either way.
I think the credit needs to fully go to the people who took it upon themselves to evacuate, as well as the city managers/mayors, and the emergency response personnel who helped with the evacuation.
There is really only one case where any politician above the city level can be blamed for any problems, and that's not turning I-45 completly north a day sooner, or even 12 hours sooner.
The scary thing is, that's being overlooked by the media and others, is that a lot of people, the next time this happens, are not going to leave. They are going to think "Why should I spend 14+ hours on the road with the heat and gas problems, when I can probably ride anything out at home". Of course, the Governor, President, etc. are going to be blamed for that.

Meanwhile, Bush forges ahead to do the right thing as he sees it. No matter what the critics say.
He knows that not everyone will be happy all the time with him, but he does what he thinks is best for everyone. I am glad he doesn't pick a certain group and kiss their ass just to keep the peace. He has spunk and I admire that.
