Yep. I've had quite a few people ask me if there really is such a thing as a tulip tree. My parents have a tulip tree in their yard. Unfortunately, it was hit by lightning. It's still standing for now, but it's slowly dying.

Unfortunately, it was hit by lightning.
Yow! Probably some serious vascular damage, ergo, its present state.

It has a huge crack in it's side. And a lot of bark and limbs were blown off.

Hmm...Because what I was thinking is that there is enough phloem/xylem damage to seriously restrict vascular flow. You'd have to lose quite a bit of bark to do so. Your parents live either in the Great Lakes area or the South, don't they?

Good idea, based on the Rush Limbaugh technology of course...

I think the corporate environment encourages employees to use "exculpatory" language as a general rule. My husband brings it home, and it drives me crazy.

"exculpatory" language
I think you can blame Flip Wilson. He said, "The Devil made me do it!"

That certainly has more zing than, "I didn't get a chance to ..."

Flip had a point. He was acknowledging the misbehavior, but not accepting any blame.
That is at least more forthright than simply admitting something happened, but claiming no personal knowledge of the events.

Yes, that's true. The way certain people avoid saying, "I decided not to (whatever action)," you'd think they were going to be struck by lightning if they declared independence from Forces Beyond My Control.

I've always thought, as many have, no doubt, that I would make a good investigative prosecutor.
The weasel way of lying always seems obvious to me.
Did you see the events in question?
"I was there in the office, but I was busy at my desk."
You haven't answered the question. Did you see Mr. Brown strike Mr. Jones?
Of course, these days, people just lie without compunction. They also get very proficient at keeping a sincere, straight face while lying. Ah, for the good old days of Perry Mason.

My brain works the same way. Drives me nuts when I've carefully phrased a yes-or-no question, and nobody will answer yes or no.

There is much to be said for being able to ask yes-or-no questions while holding a cattle prod in your hand.
