Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

Yea, I glanced at the TV earlier and the evacuation of Houston was still all backed up. Of course, that was from YESTERDAY. Then they showed this morning.

The worst is when they re-run tapes of shows with the word "LIVE" still on the tape.

Thanks for your analysis.

I know that the pressure is a bit anamolous this storm - if you ever get a reading as to why, even if it is a month from now, I would appreciate your dropping me a line with a link or whatever regarding that. I'm still pretty excited (well, trying to split hairs to be optimistic...) about the way this seems to have a chance of some weakening, from the character I'm seeing here. It seems to me that area of 115 could (slight possibility) blow out during the next two hours and leave a bit weaker storm. The ERC might be really working for us here at precisely the right time.

You're certainly right about the storm surge. I'm hoping that won't be enough to destroy the refinery infrastructure in itself...

Lousiana is getting a hurricane. I haven't seen the governor, she needs to exhibit her leadership skills. I will feel so inspired.

She's in DC typing her next "Blame Bush" memo. Michael Moore is getting it all on video.

The other guy was bigger and broader than Shep, but also seemed a little better at the whole balance thing.

Maybe Shep would do better if he put on a tutu and stood on his tippy toes.
