Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

Your pic is surreal.

The sky looked very strange tonight at sunset here in Indy, lots of clouds, layered...and now it is lightly raining...and your pic would indicate that our rain is related to this storm.

That can't be possible, considering Rita was such a huge but organized mass centered in our gulf just yesterday.

The map looks as if we are receiving the outmost effects of this storm. Wild.

They won't, because as soon as the sun comes up and the hurricane force winds stop (they screw with windage something fierce), it's looter season in Texas - no license required, no caliber restrictions, and best of all no bag limit.

It's about to be a *really* bad day to be a looter.

I was a Wal-Mart LP (Loss Prevention associate) for four years and I have seen just about EVERYTHING that could ever happen in a Wal-Mart. But that video of the NOPD was the funniest thing I have ever seen. I sent that out to all my LP buddies and they all laughed their butts off.

The only difference is, they aren't going to be able to confiscate guns from Texans without gunfire like they did in NOLA.

Geraldo is in Port Arthur and said their location was surrounded by buildings with a lot of glass, their concern was mostly flying glass.

Leventhal in Lake Charles, La.. Hannity said they will go to him shortly. The winds were strong there last time he was on. Max Mayfield is very concerned the storm surge will go all the up where Leventhal is.
