Treating A Farm Truck Like An 18-Wheeler
by Senator Sheila Harsdorf

Wisconsin farmers are letting it be known that a new administrative rule requiring a federal ID number for farm trucks hauling personal property is burdensome.

In fact, the rule means that any farm truck hauling livestock or a trailer is violating the law and subject to fines if they don’t have a USDOT number. These are the same regulations required of semi-trucks.

It’s excessive and catching farmers by surprise. Not only do they need the ID number, but they have to have safety features required of 18-wheelers, including flares and fire extinguishers!

Throughout Wisconsin, farmers are getting tagged with tickets for violating this law.

To avoid these tickets, farmers must obtain a USDOT number. To do so, one must complete an application for a USDOT number online at:
www.usdotnumberregistration.com, call 1-800-832-5660 to have the form sent to you, or obtain a paper copy of the Federal application form MCS150 and mail it to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Unfortunately, federal processing takes upwards of six weeks if done on paper format. The numbers are free, but credit cards are required for identification purposes if registering online.

While this new regulation is costing farmers additional time and expense, a group of lawmakers have authored legislation to repeal this requirement on farm trucks in Wisconsin. As the Senate lead of this bill, I support exempting farm trucks and trailers from the newly imposed requirement.

Creating a reasonable exemption that doesn’t treat farmers like professional semi-truck drivers driving 18-wheelers must go through the legislative process, including public hearings.

In the meantime, I’d like to know about your experiences with this new regulation. Please call me at 1-800-862-1092 or email me at Sen.Harsdorf@legis.state.wi.us to offer your valuable input.

Reading the local newspaper and it’s the first I have heard of this.

Thanks pub’s for more bureaucracy and bigger government.

Sure it’s free now.

Let’s can this along with the need to register all your pets with the government too.

Amish oppose animal ID

Think this doesn’t affect you?

Do you have horses? Take them someplace in you horse trailer? Then not only do you need to have your horses chipped. But also you need your ID number.

This is only one example. Have a pet goat out back. Same thing.

And you know were all this leads to.

meanwhile, the feds do next to nothing to stop the flow of illegal aliens and criminals over our borders.

Government logic: Law abiding citizens are much easier to control than criminals, so let's go after them!

No. Not his fault alone. Republicans have been in charge for years now, and what's the result? More Big Stupid Government. They promised less.

So, Republicans, how's that "limited government" thingie coming along, huh? Is government bigger or smaller? Spending more, much more, or less?

Even the First Amendment has taken a beating under Republican stewardship. We're sick of their excuses. We're sick of their lies.

Well this is. It all leads back to his pushing and passage of the un-Patriot act.

"We" are Americans who are sick of lying, greedy, power-mad politician weasels. "We" are Americans who love liberty and who think the Constitution should be respected, not ignored.

"We" are freedom lovers, not politician-worshippers.

Is the "administrative rule" only in effect against Wisconsin farmers or all farmers and ranchers in the USA? And who ordered or legislated the "administrative rule?" Is it a federal pilot project, or was it done by Wisconsin politicians?

Back on topic...

I'd like to find out what defines a "farm truck." It's one thing to imagine a 1940's Ford tractor regulated to farm duty. It's another if it's a Volvo panel truck hauling produce to market.

I don’t know yet. It’s why I left WI. out of the title. If it’s not US wide. It’s most likely in the works.
So Heads Up!
