What Would Reagan Do? (Ann Coulter Laments Bush Not Being More Like The Gipper Alert)
Worldnetdaily.com ^ | 09/21/05 | Ann Coulter

Perhaps President Bush has inadvertently nominated a true conservative to the court with this Roberts fellow. I remain skeptical based on the following facts:

Anita Hill has not stepped forward to accuse Roberts of sexual harassment.

The Democrats did not accuse Roberts of having a secret life as a racist.

We have no idea what kind of videos he rents.

Also, I'm still steamed that Bush has now dashed my dreams of an all-black Supreme Court composed of eight more Clarence Thomases. Incidentally, eight more Clarence Thomases is the only form of human cloning I would ever support.

As liberal Hendrik Hertzberg wrote in the New Yorker, Roberts was a scared choice. After Hurricane Katrina, Bush was even more scared. So when he had to pick a chief justice, he renominated the Rorschach blot.

For Christians, it's "What Would Jesus Do?" For Republicans, it's "What Would Reagan Do?" Bush doesn't have to be Reagan; he just has to consult his WWRD bracelet. If Bush had followed the WWRD guidelines, he would have nominated Antonin Scalia for the chief justiceship.

As proof, I refer you to the evidence. When Reagan had an opening for chief justice, he nominated Associate Justice William Rehnquist. While liberals were preoccupied staging die-ins against Rehnquist and accusing him of chasing black people away from the polls with a stick – something they did not accuse Roberts of – Reagan slipped Scalia onto the court.

That's what Reaganesque presidents with a five-vote margin in the Senate typically do. Apart from toppling the Soviet Empire, Scalia remains Reagan's greatest triumph.

Scalia deserved the chief justiceship. He's the best man for the job. He has suffered lo these many years with Justices Souter, Kennedy and O'Connor. He believes in a sedentary judiciary. He's for judicial passivism. Scalia also would have been the first cigar-smoking, hot-blooded Italian chief justice, which I note the diversity crowd never mentions.

But most important, if Bush had nominated Scalia, liberals would have responded with their usual understated screams of genocide, and Bush could have nominated absolutely anyone to fill Justice O'Connor's seat. He also could have cut taxes, invaded Syria, and bombed North Korea and Cuba just for laughs. He could even have done something totally nuts, like enforce the immigration laws.

Even if Roberts turns out to be another Rehnquist (too much to hope for another Scalia!), we don't know that, Bush doesn't know that, and Bush has blown a golden opportunity to make Chuck Schumer the public face of the Democratic Party. A few weeks of Schumer as their spokesman, and normal Democrats would be clamoring for Howard Dean to get back on the stick. Teddy Kennedy would start showing up at hearings actually holding a double scotch.

Inasmuch as Bush must still choose a replacement for O'Connor, it's important to remember the "Sandra Day O'Connor bylaw" to the WWRD guidelines: Never appoint anyone like Sandra Day O'Connor to any court at any level.

Reagan had made a campaign promise to appoint a woman to the Supreme Court. He didn't say anything about appointing a ninny. But back in 1981, it was slim pickings for experienced female judges. O'Connor was a terrible mistake and will forever mar Reagan's record, but at least he did it only once.

Bush has already fulfilled all his campaign promises to liberals – and then some! He said he'd be a "compassionate conservative," which liberals interpreted to mean that he would bend to their will, enact massive spending programs, and be nice to liberals. When Bush won the election, that sealed the deal. It meant the Democrats won.

Consequently, Bush has enacted massive new spending programs, obstinately refused to deal with illegal immigration, opposed all conservative Republicans in their primary races, and invited Teddy Kennedy over for movie night. He's even sent his own father to socialize with aging porn star Bill Clinton.

(Sidebar on the aging porn star: Idiot Republicans fraternizing with the Clintons has not harmed the decadent buffoon's reputation abroad. A Chinese condom manufacturer recently named one of its condoms the "Clinton," a fitting tribute to the man who had Monica Lewinsky perform oral sex on him in the Oval Office on Easter Sunday. Their advertising slogans are: "Always wear a 'Clinton' when you're getting a 'Lewinsky'!"; "I still believe in a place called the G-spot"; "Extra-thin skinned!"; "For when you really, really want to feel her pain." Note to Bush: This isn't Walter Mondale. How about sending Pops on the road with Joey Buttafuoco?)

According to my WWRD wristwatch, it's time for Bush to invade Grenada, bomb Libya, fire the air traffic controllers, and joke about launching a first strike against the Soviet Union. In lieu of that, how about nominating a conservative to O'Connor's seat on the court? It would be a bold gesture.

thought to blame the local and state officials in Louisiana who were more responsible for what was going on in their own backyard.

Yet in the very post that you quoted, I said that the democrats started blaming Bush and FEMA for the mistakes that THEY made. I've made this point several times in this thread.

Apology?

At this rate, the GOP will soon be a religious and morality party only.

That will still make this country a better place than the rats. The last several elections have consistently solidified gains to the right. We did not get to our current level of socialism over night. It was done incrementally. It can be reversed incrementally.

Thank-You...I did know that long ago and far away, but it was easier to ask than think about it for a day...getting to be a long night.

You believe there was a surplus?

Geesh, you have real reading comprehension issues. Did I say that we had a surplus? I said that the Prescription Plan alone would rule out the chance of us every running a surplus again. Where did I say that we had one right before Bush took office?

The whole point of electing a conservatives is to push for a smaller more fiscally responsible government. With this type of government, we could run surpluses and actually give rebates rather than deficit spend and just push the tax increases back a few years.

There are more things in life than just Roe v Wade.

Only a few thousand votes?

We were about 3,000 votes in Florida from having president Gore. We were about 90,000 votes in Ohio away from having president Kerry.

Those elections were VERY close - much closer than they should have been.

It is not clear how INCREASING the level of socialism can be seen as reversing it. Is it because the party doing it has an (R) by their names?

Regardless, a party that only cateers to religous and morality issues won't get elected to much anyway. Bush got the votes he did because he ran as a conservative - not a socialist with soft spot for morality issues.

While most fiscal conservatives won't bolt to the democrats, they won't vote for a religous party either.

Here is the Timeline of events BEFORE Katrina. I don't see where it shows President Bush appealing to the citizens of LA and New Orleans the way he has done in Texas.

August 26:

11:30 AM EDT: Katrina is upgraded to a Category 2 hurricane.

5:00 PM EDT: The National Hurricane Center issues an advisory forecasting that Katrina would soon be a Category 3 hurricane.

5:00 PM CDT: Louisiana Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco declares a state of emergency for Louisiana (see public document).

Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour declares a state of emergency for Mississippi (see public document).

Saturday, August 27:

President George W. Bush's weekly radio address focuses on Gaza withdrawal and the Iraqi constitution. He makes no mention of Hurricane Katrina.

President Bush officially declares that a "state of emergency" exists in Louisiana and orders Federal aid to the affected areas to complement state and local relief efforts.

4:00 pm CDT: Per Governor Blanco's order, Contraflow begins , reversing all traffic on inbound interstate lanes and making more room for evacuating vehicles in outbound lanes.

5:00 PM CDT: New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin declares a State of Emergency and issues a voluntary evacuation order, saying he is having his legal team determine if he can order a mandatory evacuation without exposing the city to legal liability for the closure of hotels and other businesses.

8:00 PM EDT: National Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield briefs Louisiana Gov. Blanco, New Orleans Mayor Nagin and Mississippi Gov. Barbour on Katrina's status. (SRC=TPM reporting)

11:00 PM EDT: The National Hurricane Center issues a warning suggesting that Katrina is moving in a western direction in an area that includes New Orleans.

Sunday, August 28:

1:00 AM CDT: Katrina is declared a Category 4 storm.

8:00 AM EDT: Katrina is declared a Category 5 storm, the highest possible rating.

Approx. 10:00 AM CDT: New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin orders mandatory evacuations of New Orleans.

Approx. 12:00 PM EDT: National Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield personally briefs President Bush as part of regular FEMA briefing. (SRC=TPM reporting)

Louisiana Governor Blanco sends letter to President Bush requesting various federal aid.

President Bush declares a state of emergency for both Mississippi and Alabama, and declared Florida a federal disaster area in light of damage done by Hurricane Katrina.

Afternoon: Director of the National Weather Service (NWS) National Hurricane Center (NHC), Max Mayfield, personally briefs President Bush about Katrina by videoconference.

According to the AP, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson offers Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco help from his state's National Guard. Blanco accepts, but paperwork needed to get the troops en route doesn't come from Washington until late Thursday , Sep 2.

By using the word "again".

Using the word "again" doesn't' mean that the condition has to current be in effect. If a person in 2005 said, "i don't think we will ever go to the moon AGAIN", does that mean that we had to be on the moon in 2004?

If a person in 2005 says "I think we will a President like Reagan again" does that mean that that Reagan must have been the previous president?

Likewise, if a person says "I don't think we will be able to run a surplus again", that doesn't mean that there had to be a surplus the previous year.

Agreed. That is why they need to be in a different party than the small government, fiscal conservatives.

Bush Urges People to Flee Hurricane (August 28th)

Bush Urges People to Flee Hurricane

- By JENNIFER LOVEN

Sunday, August 28, 2005

(08-28) 13:13 PDT Crawford, Texas (AP) --

President Bush, as he readied the federal government for a massive relief effort, on Sunday urged people in the path of Hurricane Katrina to forget anything but their safety and move to higher ground as instructed.

"We cannot stress enough the danger this hurricane poses to Gulf Coast communities," Bush said as the storm roared across the gulf toward New Orleans and other communities. "I urge all citizens to put their own safety and the safety of their families first by moving to safe ground."

With forecasters warning of a category five storm, the president made sure the federal response would not be delayed by already declaring emergencies in Mississippi and Florida just hours after a similar declaration for Louisiana. Such declarations make federal aid available to assist with disaster relief, but they are rarely made before a storm even hits.

Working from his Texas ranch, Bush participated via videoconference in a large meeting of federal, state and local disaster management officials preparing for the storm's onslaught. Separately, he spoke by phone with the governors of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

"We will do everything in our power to help the people and the communities affected by this storm," the president said.

Winds reaching 175 mph and a potentially devastating storm surge were feared when Hurricane Katrina reached land early Monday. The 485,000 residents of New Orleans were ordered to evacuate the city.

If you're having to defend your own posting style, you've lost. Face it, the way you worded the post, suggested we HAD a surplus and wouldn't have one AGAIN with the way things are.

I agree, I told my husband it cannot be done with an wink of the eye, it will take years to undo what the socialist have done. I do believe the more conservative of the Republican party will win over the RINO's (thanks rep)in the long run and it does take time and patience and strategy...incrementally.

Right, you're just parroting the media.

Is english your second language? Seriously. I ask this because it doesn't seem like you comprehend the words that are written.

How am I parroting what the media said if I claiming that the democrats are the ones that made the mistakes but then pinned them on Bush? The media said that they were Bush's mistakes all along.

I have continually said that Bush's mistakes were all ones of public relations and not of any real consequence to anyone's health or life. I've said that several times.
