Breaking: Jet Blue emergency landing, Long Beach, CA (UPDATE: Plane Landed Safely)
KABC Channel 7, live broadcast

Posted on 09/21/2005 4:21:43 PM PDT by kingu

A Jet Blue aircraft just did a low altitude flyby of Long Beach airport after reporting some concern with their forward gear. The television helicopter caught an image of it - the gear is turned sideways and tilted.

Aircraft is heading out towards the ocean to drop fuel, will turn around, and attempt a 'soft field' landing, keeping the nose up as long as possible.

MSNBC got the plane zeroed in. Except the commentator mentioned a firefighter from Long Island as opposed to Long Beach.

A little over a couple of hours, yes!

(I'd be a wreck by now...or at least very drunk!)

Sorry, I flicked to MSNBC when they flicked off the story. But judging from past comments, that would be consistent with the Bloviating wonder, ranting populist like and over-generalizing everyhting so badly you gotta wonder, how can you start to inject reason here, especially since you would only have 15 seconds before he drowns you out loudly, bogarts the remaining time, and gives you an eyeblink of a "last word".

MSNBC has the best coverage besides the local channels. Bob Arnott is the only one talking sense about this situation at this point.

Do you know if this is the north or south landing runway -- assuming they won't use the takeoff runways since they are closer to the terminal buildings? The north landing runway has no buildings on the north side (while the south landing runway has buildings on the south side), but the south runway is longer and they may want the distance to allow the plane to coast on it's back wheels as long as possible.

"well, if the FAA says it, it must be true."

Good one. Yes, government is not the most reputable source.

FWIW: Per the Airline Pilot's Association Safety Director, Mr. John Russell, the lack of a fuel jettison capability is due to the fact that the difference between the maximum weight of the aircraft and it's maximum landing weight are not that far apart; 170K v. 142K pounds for the A320, as compared to a disparity appraoching 200K pounds for a 747-400. The larger craft has fuel jettison capability, this smaller craft does not.

FoxNews just cut out to the Bloviator. Amazing.

No doubt using the hot air to improve the gliding capability of the aircraft, much like a hot air baloon.

OK. Thnaks. That's only a few minutes from now.
You're right, this is intense. Lord have mercy.

I cannot imagine the stress on the pilots.
God be with them.
