~ MILITARY SHORT SPEAK ~ Military Rank - Part 2 Officers Ranks |
|
Today we're taking a side trip in the Short Speak journey to learn more about the different military ranks. Hopefully you're not as confused about it as I am! |
Officer ranks in the United States military consist of commissioned officers and warrant officers. The commissioned ranks are the highest in the military. These officers hold presidential commissions and are confirmed at their ranks by the Senate. Army, Air Force and Marine Corps officers are called company grade officers in the pay grades of O-1 to O-3, field grade officers in pay grades O-4 to O-6 and general officers in pay grades O-7 and higher. The equivalent officer groupings in the Navy are called junior grade, mid-grade and flag. Warrant officers hold warrants from their service secretary and are specialists and experts in certain military technologies or capabilities. The lowest ranking warrant officers serve under a warrant, but they receive commissions from the president upon promotion to chief warrant officer 2. These commissioned warrant officers are direct representatives of the president of the United States. They derive their authority from the same source as commissioned officers but remain specialists, in contrast to commissioned officers, who are generalists. There are no warrant officers in the Air Force. |
Naval officers wear distinctively different rank devices depending upon the uniform they're wearing. The three basic uniforms and rank devices used are: khakis, collar insignia pins; whites, stripes on shoulder boards; and blues, stripes sewn on the lower coat sleeves.

LOL -- it's sort of a two steps forward and three steps back. It's amazing how many times a kid needs to use the restroom after they're put to bed!

The other thing funny that happened at church... pastor was going to use one of those portable defibrolators for a visual prop to help make a point. So he opens it up and it starts giving verbal instructions for it's use. The second instruction was "Remove all clothing from the chest" and he said "Well, I think you get the idea." Then a couple minutes later he was going to show us how the instructions for use were written inside the cover...and he reopened the lid only to be told "Remove all clothing from the chest" once again. The whole church was howling!!

StarCMC,
good post, however I must add my two cents. NCOs are Officers- they just are not commissioned by the President. NCOs derive their authority from the Commissioned Officers; Officers derive their authority from the President; Warrant Officers derive their authority from Congress. Warrant Officers are only commissioned when they reach Chief Warrant Officer 2, as Wobbly-Ones (which they are affectionately called in the Army) are not commissioned, just like Noncommissioned Officers (Sergeant through Command Sergeant Major).
Often soldiers don't even realize these facts.
