good post, however I must add my two cents. NCOs are Officers- they just are not commissioned by the President. NCOs derive their authority from the Commissioned Officers; Officers derive their authority from the President; Warrant Officers derive their authority from Congress. Warrant Officers are only commissioned when they reach Chief Warrant Officer 2, as Wobbly-Ones (which they are affectionately called in the Army) are not commissioned, just like Noncommissioned Officers (Sergeant through Command Sergeant Major).
Often soldiers don't even realize these facts.
