I posted this FEMA press release on another thread but I figure it, since many probably won't see that post, it should have a thread of it's own.

Animals in distress stir deep emotions and, sadly, when a natural disaster like Katrina occurs there are a lot of scam artist who rush to take advantage of those emotions. Additionally, well meaning folks who rush in on their own trying to help without working with the resources in place often confuse and complicate an already bad situation.

This statement from FEMA is a very welcome change from past situations. It is important that folks know how to help, if they'd like and who to contact ~ whether they are looking to help or looking to find a displace pet.

I've been in contact with a vet in one of the hardest hit areas and I cannot tell you how impressed I am with the work he has done and is doing - not only in saving animals, but in working to make sure these animals can be reunited with their owners at a later date!

Please be very wary of emails that may come to you making rash claims about animals being neglected (or worse) by the brave folks working in the hurricane damaged areas. Please work within the system and help make the system work!!

Thanks for posting this. Nobody but trained rescuers should be in New Orleans, unless they're on the outskirts, transferring crates to shelters outside of town.

Good post. Our little buddies need our love too.

God didn't just create man and woman...he created all this moving, growing, breathing, breeding world.

And remember...only Adam and Eve fell from grace. The rest of God's earthly creation did not fall.

Humans are to blame for death on this planet.

Well, it's time for "Brenda the Aggresso Bitch" and "Lola Wonder Dog" to crank up their canine telegraph to reassure their four-legged friends stranded by Katrina!

Animals can be a great comfort to people in times of crisis. This is important too. It is a luxury to be able to do it I know. But it will give cheer to many people in a dark time. *That* is why it is important to do.

I was talking to my vet today -- I have known him and his dad and his no. 1 partner for almost 30 years and they have taken care of all my cats and my dog from day one. They're good, compassionate, honest folks.

He and some other like-minded vets have set up a fund to help the animal rescue effort. They are in direct contact with vets and veterinary schools in the affected area, so they know exactly what is needed.

Briarcliff Animal Foundation

I can vouch for these folks as good, honest vets who have done a lot for the community here. Your money will be put to good use.

Something else - they are there because of people, and so there is some responsibility involved, and there is grim factor - we have enough corpses in NO as it is, without any more being added (or feasting on them).
