I agree with you...we were all looking at a women and didn't have any idea of Roberts. However, Owens will probably get the nod...I'd love Janice Brown to be his nominee pick. Brown has always been my choice.

It's been frequently stated, almost until it has taken on a life of its own, that Roberts was a surprise and not on anybody's short list. But that really isn't so. He was on a lot of short lists. Here is one example:

The Supreme Court Shortlist

By the way, I think that the next nominee will be important for many reasons. While Justice Roberts seems to be a capable and honorable man, I'm just not convinced that he is as conservative as Rehnquist, particularly on some of the social issues. I hope that I'm wrong.

"She called Roe an "exercise of raw judicial power," and cited evidence McCorvey presented showing abortions hurt women. Jones, a Reagan nominee, wrote that the "[Supreme] Court's rulings have rendered basic abortion policy beyond the power of our legislative bodies.""

Wow. I can't see this happening, but if GWB were to nominate Jones, I would never criticize him again about anything.

I think he should start with Priscilla Owen. Then if the DumRats don't approve of her, he should go with the black Edith (I can't keep their names straight).

Somebody should trot out a short list and put John O'Neil on it (ie the guy that started swift boat vets). He clerked for Rehnquist, you know. May have even been at the same time as John Roberts...heh. that would be classic! Can you imagine Kerry??

Janice Rogers Brown is my choice also someone the libbers would have a hard time with !They would have to come up with a beaut. Pubic hair tossing wouldn't work !
Lets see she worked in a topless bar no she cheated in college naw Kennedy has that one, she isn't smart enough naw that’s Biden ,she isn't minority enough no way, lets see she should be a Mexican for balance on the court naw, they could have Kennedy say she was her mistress naw she has too much class for that one, I have it she isn't qualified because she is an insensitive conservative lackey of the Haliburton company and Channey and Rove sent her !That’s it we will go with that one and we will stop her cold !Good plan Chuckie.

I would like to split hairs here. First, I want a judge who will interpret the constitution as it was written, regardless of how that impacts his or my personal philosophies and beliefs. Second, I want a judge with the sense, values and judgment to recognize that abortion is murder.

I'm ignorant about the history of the SCOTUS. Was Justice Clarence Thomas the first black man on the Court?

No. Thurgood Marshall, 1967-1991.

I could care less if a judge is "pro-life," I want a pro-states' rights judge.

Ditto that. Too few have a clue about what the Constitution stands for.

Thank you. Well maybe Bush will be the first to put a black female on the Court.

I mean, now that the Pubs control the Senate, the House, and the committee chairs, they hold the upper hand now, and all of this Democratic gnashing of teeth is just PR.

You're absolutely right. *shakes head*

That was made very clear since, who was it, Biden, who was so vicous, and in private terms, told Judge Roberts he was the "best he'd seen" in front of the committee.

I listened to Sen. Fred Thompson on Hannity this afternoon (I was driving and I was lucky, not too much static out of the Ogdensburg, NY station, LOL!). And he said, these Dems face a hard choice--either alienating their hard core leftist base, or alieniating the middle, who can see that Judge Roberts is reasonable and capable, and, if they get to see enough of the testimony: brilliant.

No Justice Thomas replaced the first black justice, Thurgood Marshall, who served from 1967-1991.

Honestly, there's probably a lot that we can't know without the resources to vet someone that the White House possesses. But, with what we do know, if it is going to be a woman, my two top choices are Priscilla Owen and Edith Jones. Although Janice Rogers Brown would definitely be better than many that we have on the current court, her reputation as a libertarian/conservative rather than a classic conservative lessens her appeal somewhat for many. And I'm not sure that Edith Clement has the track record that would give us the confidence to say that she is a Scalia and not a Souter. Just my two cents worth.
