FLIGHT 93 MEMORIAL Please respond!

As many of you have already heard, the National park Service is nearing a final decision regarding a memorial to the passengers of Flight 93. The aircraft would have hit the capitol on 9/11 were it not for the heroism of the passengers, who fought back against their Islamic hijackers. The memorial will be built in the field in Pennsylvania where the plane crashed.

Unfortunately, the design which is under final review is far from a memorial to the victims. The winning design, chosen from over a thousand entries, is called “The Crescent of Embrace”. It is a just that... a red crescent. It features a crescent-shaped grove of red maple trees which ring the crash site. Unfortunately for those who perished aboard Flight 93, the crescent is the internationally-recognized symbol of religious life for Islam around the globe. Architect Paul Murdoch, the winner of the design contest, has emphasized to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that his creation was about "healing" and "contemplation." As a "...gesture of healing and bonding...", he has proposed hanging wind chimes in a tall tower built at the crash site.

As any rational human being can easily deduct, this memorial will be an utter insult to those who were murdered by Islamic terrorists on September 11th. Through an apologistic, hand-wringing, liberal "embrace" of that day (and this war), the idea of this memorial has been corrupted to the point where it has become the literal embrace of Islamic savagery by the "multicultural" left.

There have been some great articles written on this topic... you can see them at http://www.nationalledger.com/artman/publish/article_2726705.shtml http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1484237/posts

I have posted this request to ask for your help. If this memorial is approved and built, it will stand as an affront to those who gave their lives so unselfishly that day. Write, email, fax, or call the National Park Service. Ask your friends and family to do the same. Let them know, in no uncertain terms, where you stand!

The design must first be approved by the Superintendent of the Flight 93 National Memorial. Contact info is: National Park Service, 109 West Main Street, Suite 104, Somerset, PA 15501-2035. You can voice your comments by e-mail at FLNI_Superintendent@nps.gov or by telephone at (814) 443-4557. Fax is (814) 443-2180. However, the final decision regarding the design of the Flight 93 Memorial must be ultimately approved by The Secretary of the Department of the Interior, Ms. Gale A. Norton. Messages can be sent to her via e-mail at: gale_norton@ios.doi.gov or use the site’s Internet contact page. Her telephone number is (202) 208-3100.

(Thanks to milford421 for most of the contact info!)

We are many voices. Together, we can try and stop this.

My email to Gail Norton:

I am utterly disgusted by the proposed Flight 93 Memorial design.

The red crescent moon is the symbol of the The Red Crescent Society, the arm of the International Federation of The Red Cross dedicated to serving Islamic countries. Do you honestly intend to create a monument which glorifies servitude to those responsible for the nurder of innocents? Moreover, the crescent moon with a star is the internationally-recognized symbol of the faith of Islam, and the crescent is featured prominently in some variation on the flags of most Islamic states. There can be no greater embrace of the murderers' religious beliefs, save a memorial resembling Osama bin Laden.

This is a war memorial. The crescent, and the pacifistic idea driving the design (as stated by the "architect" himself), are an unreserved, absolute slur against those who died so tragically that day. This "Crescent Of Embrace" does nothing to commemorate the heroism of those who saved our capitol from being destroyed... Instead, it symbolizes the defeatism and apologistic nature of those would surrender our nation's freedoms in the name of passivity. Somehow, it even manages to celebrate the religion behind the killing of so many people that September morning. I find it inconceivable that the National Park service would support the creation of something that is so obviously an insult to those it purports to memorialize. Perhaps that is why there are no longer photos of this monstrous affront to humanity on your website.

I am outraged at this proposal. Should it be approved, the National Park Service should be ashamed at the stain on our nation it has helped create.

Maybe the Park Service feels that there were, after all, muslims aboard that flight, and their sacrifice needs to be honored.

I couldn't get the email to work yesterday, so I faxed this:

Columnist Mark Steyn wrote a column which perfectly states my feelings on the Flight 93 Memorial design, “Crescent of Embrace”:

‘Four years ago, Todd Beamer’s rallying cry was quoted by Presidents and rock stars alike. That’s all that’s needed in that field: the kind of simple dignified memorial you see on small-town commons saluting Civil war veterans, a granite block with the names of the passengers and the words “LET’S ROLL.” ‘

I agree with Steyn’s observation: The proposed Crescent of Embrace looks more like memorial to the attackers than to the Americans who saved lives that day. With this proposed design, I feel like Flight 93 was hijacked again.

The heroes and victims on that flight--and their surviving families-- deserve better. The National Park Service will receive no donations or support from my family with this insulting design. Please do the right thing and choose another, more fitting memorial.

War on Terror Crescent of Surrender
Published Sep 12, 2005 - 08:18 AM
Who designed this "CRESCENT of SURRENDER" to the Terrorists?

This was supposed to be the Memorial to the 44 Brave Americans on FLight 93 who were murdered by islamic jihadists during the September 11, 2001 attack on the USA.

Social Progressive Design for the Surrender and Forgiveness for the deaths of the Isalmic Jihadists on Flight 93 - All muslims will instantly recognize the significance of the crescent sysmbol! - Our purpose is to disarm the Americans and let them fall asleep --- Mikhail Gorbachev, President of the Soviet Union, to the Politburo

What's more, the orientation of the design appears to be intentionally pointed towards Mecca. Whoever designed this should be shot as an enemy spy.

Thaks for the heads-up... that's a great site. I was unaware that the design seemed to be oriented to face Mecca.

I'm confused about one thing: are these maple trees INTENDED by the architect to resemble an Islamic crescent, or is it just an unfortunate coincidence?

Given the liberal, "multicultural" stance taken by the architect, and given that the memorial is oriented towards Mecca (see website below), I would say that it was absolutely intended to resemble a crescent.

Such information may be interesting. But, intentional or not, the design is terrible in that it IS a crescent, and the crescent IS the universally-recognized symbol of Islam.

After having seen "Flight 93-The Flight That Fought Back", I say hell no to the proposed design. Watching that took me back fours years ago and all the emotions resufaced full force. Mix in the events concerning islam in the interim, and I would hate to go to that field and see that red crescent on hallowed ground. Those on Flt 93 WON the first battle in the War on Terrorism. To have this as the final approved design, would be an insult to their heroism. Deep down, they must have known that the flight wasn't going to end well, but they, like those that jumped from the WTC, went out on their terms. Not on the islamic scum's. Personally, I have no dog in this fight. However, as an American and a citizen of the world's ONLY superpower, I resent the design. A star, cross, or even a truncated cone would be more preferable to what is being proposed.

ALWAYS REMEMBER THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001.

Paul Murdoch of Paul Murdoch Architects. From his website:

As architects, we are uniquely qualified to help formulate and translate policy into tangible form... Each design solution is seen as a contribution to the human condition; as it exists today and evolves into future generations. More than problem solving however, we aspire to emotionally affect and uplift our lives through poetry and beauty.

It is through these transcendent qualities that we optimistically strive for ways to enrich life and fulfill our original purpose for engaging in the practice of architecture.”

There's a link from Michelle Malkin's website to the official Flight 93 Memorial website (with phone & fax numbers listed). I looked at the other finalists' designs and I have to agree with Michelle - Disturbed Harmony is the best. I e-mailed my complaint yesterday. We can't let a red crescent memorialize those people who fought against Islam on that airplane.

Well, he picked RED maples. There are certainly a lot of other trees he could have used. Anyone with half a brain can see the connection with the crescent. Can you imagine the hue and cry if the shape had "accidently" resembled a cross?!?! I don't believe for a second that it was unintentional. They're just trying to make anyone who objects look like a bad guy by playing innocent and telling us that we're "reading too much into it. See where your mind is?" I'll bet if it goes through, someone will take a saw to some of those trees and recreate the memorial.
