I am utterly disgusted by the proposed Flight 93 Memorial design.
The red crescent moon is the symbol of the The Red Crescent Society, the arm of the International Federation of The Red Cross dedicated to serving Islamic countries. Do you honestly intend to create a monument which glorifies servitude to those responsible for the nurder of innocents? Moreover, the crescent moon with a star is the internationally-recognized symbol of the faith of Islam, and the crescent is featured prominently in some variation on the flags of most Islamic states. There can be no greater embrace of the murderers' religious beliefs, save a memorial resembling Osama bin Laden.
This is a war memorial. The crescent, and the pacifistic idea driving the design (as stated by the "architect" himself), are an unreserved, absolute slur against those who died so tragically that day. This "Crescent Of Embrace" does nothing to commemorate the heroism of those who saved our capitol from being destroyed... Instead, it symbolizes the defeatism and apologistic nature of those would surrender our nation's freedoms in the name of passivity. Somehow, it even manages to celebrate the religion behind the killing of so many people that September morning. I find it inconceivable that the National Park service would support the creation of something that is so obviously an insult to those it purports to memorialize. Perhaps that is why there are no longer photos of this monstrous affront to humanity on your website.
I am outraged at this proposal. Should it be approved, the National Park Service should be ashamed at the stain on our nation it has helped create.

Maybe the Park Service feels that there were, after all, muslims aboard that flight, and their sacrifice needs to be honored.
Columnist Mark Steyn wrote a column which perfectly states my feelings on the Flight 93 Memorial design, Crescent of Embrace:
Four years ago, Todd Beamers rallying cry was quoted by Presidents and rock stars alike. Thats all thats needed in that field: the kind of simple dignified memorial you see on small-town commons saluting Civil war veterans, a granite block with the names of the passengers and the words LETS ROLL.
I agree with Steyns observation: The proposed Crescent of Embrace looks more like memorial to the attackers than to the Americans who saved lives that day. With this proposed design, I feel like Flight 93 was hijacked again.
The heroes and victims on that flight--and their surviving families-- deserve better. The National Park Service will receive no donations or support from my family with this insulting design. Please do the right thing and choose another, more fitting memorial.

Crescent of Surrender Published Sep 12, 2005 - 08:18 AM Who designed this "CRESCENT of SURRENDER" to the Terrorists? This was supposed to be the Memorial to the 44 Brave Americans on FLight 93 who were murdered by islamic jihadists during the September 11, 2001 attack on the USA. |
What's more, the orientation of the design appears to be intentionally pointed towards Mecca. Whoever designed this should be shot as an enemy spy.
I'm confused about one thing: are these maple trees INTENDED by the architect to resemble an Islamic crescent, or is it just an unfortunate coincidence?
Who designed this?
I sent similar e-mails to Norton and to the Superintendent registering my outrage.

Here's a solution:
Take their crescent, combine it with "Let's Roll"
and you get a crescent roll.
So why not make the Pillsbury Dough Boy a symbol of universal compromise? Friendly, non threatening, and completely meaningless.
The perfect appeasement. /s
I think the least they could do is place a statue of Atta at the center of the crescent.
Well, we all know what would happen if it were in the shape of a cross.
Thanks for the contact info. E-mail sent! Maybe if enough outrage is expressed they'll see the error of this 'design'.
Ms Norton seems to have a kind of "rainbow coalition" mentality, reaching across to our Islamic "brothers" and "sisters" in an apparent effort to forgive them at the very place where our innocents were murdered by them....a fine example of the fact that all people are not created intellectually equal in matters of common sense.
My idea would be to build a monument on an artificial hill. Have a seperate path leading up to the hill for each of the passengers. That would symbolize that these people were just going about their normal activities when their lives converged on this terrible event. On top of the hill, a monument and a small museum.

There is no doubt that certain symbols carry with them a far greater weight than others.
The red crescent being considered for the flight 93 memorial is bound by its past
use and inherent natural signification to cause greater discord than the event it purports
to memorialize. Such hubris is unrivaled which dares to tempt fate by building what the
islamists will assuredly see as nothing more than an idol and what christians will see
as the blood moon in the book of revelations, signifying the opening of the seven seals
and the pouring out of the wrath of God. Such a design as this is an insult to the dead,
not a memorial. Please, for the sake of all, do not proceed with this design for the
memorial of flight 93. Do not mark the soil of this great country with the growth
of a symbol which represents the meccan moon god of war and the blood
of innocents spilled in his name upon that same soil.
