I'm confused about one thing: are these maple trees INTENDED by the architect to resemble an Islamic crescent, or is it just an unfortunate coincidence?

Such information may be interesting. But, intentional or not, the design is terrible in that it IS a crescent, and the crescent IS the universally-recognized symbol of Islam.

The architect stated clearly that it is intended to be a crescent. He denies that it is an Islamic Crescent, even though he drew it in red (fall colours) for the contest entry.
