The Dem playbook

The Hill newspaper gives us a peek at the Democratic playbook for the Roberts hearings. Below are the attack assignments for the Democratic members of the Committee:

Kennedy -- civil rights

Leahy -- Bybee torture memo

Biden -- privacy, personal autonomyand the 9th Amendment

Kohl -- Property rights and civil liberties

Feinstein -- "judicial activism" and Roe vs. Wade

Feingold -- limits of executive powers

Schumer and Durbin have wisely refused to show their hand.

For the most part, the Dems were a little more mild than I expected today. I think Feingold sickened me more than anyone. Schumer is such a putz and Kennedy, as we know is a total fat turd. Kennedy is the one that I would have to be stopped from jumping over the table for and scratching his eyes out.

I missed the hearing in its entirety. Anything In Roberts responses that would cause concern for conservatives?

It's obscene to think of Michelle Malkin being on the same network with Keith Olberman. They should replace him with reruns of his SNL skits.

LOL...Roberts ran circles around them. Even creepy Biden commented on that.

Darn didn't realize Hatch was being interviewed. Did he mention the arrogant tone from those across the aisle?

If anything, it should have inspired conservatives. He appears to be a constructionist to the letter. He even, with the help of Senator Cornyn, answered the much debated issue of Roe v Wade be settled law. Cornyn asked Roberts if that means that it could not be changed and Roberts said that indeed, it may be. That, of course is paraphrasing but is the jist.

I sure didn't see anything. He was AWESOME. My only concern is what the dums ail do to the next nominee after having been humiliated and exposed for the dopes they are by Roberts.

Not from what I saw, but I didn't see the entire hearing. Some of the media have spun Roberts' statement about precedent as if he endorsed Roe, but it's a mischaracterization. He basically said precedent is important and deserves consideration but isn't sacrosanct. He said Roe is a precedent, and so is Casey, which is simply a fact. He also noted that Casey's modifications of Roe constituted an alteration of precedent, which I liked. He effectively told the Democrats that Roe has already been tampered with.

Cornyn just got Roberts to say that by saying that Roe v Wade is settled law, is not neccessarily saying that it can't be overtuned, to which Roberts agreed.

Finally, the correct follow-up question to Robert's answer on settled law.

Be good to throw them another one who is able to humiliate them further.

There's no "i" in "team," but there sure are a lot of 'em in "judiciary committee."

that is truly entertaining

What is a real puzzler is that the left despises him as well as some posts on DU will attest to.

I understand he will continue his NBC show on Sundays with appearances on The Today Show and Imus, lest NBC lose $$ invested in him.

*one more thing* -- Roberts is not one of us (partisans) but he is truly a STRICT CONSTITUTIONALIST, just like POTUS promised. I have tired of people refering to whether or not he is a conservative. It isn't the point. Yes, I believe he's a conservative, whether as "conservative" politically as Reagan or Scalia? I don't know, but I do believe he's a conservative. I have no doubt he meets the requirements set forth by the President and by Conservatives in this arena. Courts are not meant to spur a movement, either Liberal or Conservative. It is not their role. Simply to function as a co-equal branch charged with the responsibility to interpret the Constitution. This duty he will discharge well.
