PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: After the President and First Lady attended church in Washington this morning, they participated in a September 11, 2001 rememberance and moment of silence on the White House lawn. GWB then headed for New Orleans where he touched down mid-afternoon. He will be spending the night aboard the USS Iwo Jima, which is docked in New Orleans harbor near downtown.

The President was met by New Orleans Mayor Nagin, but Gov. Kathleen Blanco was not present.

Patriot Day 2005 Proclamation

A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

Four years have passed since our country was brutally attacked on a quiet September morning. On that day, thousands of innocent lives were taken from us. The victims and the families who lost loved ones remain in the hearts and prayers of our Nation. We also remember the courage of the firefighters, police officers, emergency rescue personnel, and scores of private citizens who showed us the true meaning of heroism and demonstrated our resolve to the world.

The mission that began on September 11, 2001, continues. Today, we see the virtue of the September 11th heroes embodied in our military personnel, who are taking the fight to our enemies and helping to keep us safe at home. Thousands of other Americans, from intelligence analysts to border guards to countless others, are doing vital work to help defend America and prevent future attacks. We are grateful to all of these men and women and to their families for their service and sacrifice. We honor those who have lost their lives defending our freedom, and we pray that God comfort their families. We pledge that we will not rest until we have won the war on terror.

As we mark this solemn anniversary, I call upon all our citizens to express their patriotism and their gratitude for the blessings of liberty. By flying the flag, supporting military families, and teaching young people about our founding ideals, we honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and since, and we help preserve our freedom for future generations.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107 89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day."

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2005, as Patriot Day. I call upon the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half staff on Patriot Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe Patriot Day with appropriate ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services, to display the flag at half staff from their homes on that day, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. eastern daylight time to honor the innocent victims who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this ninth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirtieth.

GEORGE W. BUSH

People in my own neighborhood were immediately out with chain saws clearing fallen trees from the road...

The lack of such self-sufficiency is what sickened me the most about what happened at the Superdome and NO Convention Center. Granted, it was not pleasant in those facilities for the two to four days people were stuck there. But it could have been a WHOLE LOT better if people had organized and policed themselves, did everything possible to maintain some sanitary areas, helped the ill, elderly and mothers with young children, and otherwise acted like rational human beings rather than savages.

Great photos, snugs. Gen. Myers' term as chairman of the JC is almost up, and he will be retiring shortly. I'll miss him.

These little guys are just looking for their Masters. I know humans come first but it is so sad when animals are left and don't know what happened to their masters. Don't flame me please, not putting animals above humans. This whole week and day has gotten to me.

They were saying on FNC they are looking for people who are willing to look after them for 3 months...

Oh, if only my former landlord had not died suddenly and I didn't have to move last year. Where I am now is way too small for me to foster any rescued animals, although I'd love to do it. Sigh...

"May God continue to strengthen and encourage him."

And every chance we have to email the White House our encouragement and appreciation, we should take.

DrDeb, thank you SO much for that link. I've been saying the federal response was NOT SLOW from the beginning. Trying every which way to get the truth out as best I can from the grassroots. I agree. We must send this to Republican congress-critters, as well as to every newspaper and TV station we can think of. The MSM has maligned a magnificent job by federal first responders who saved thousands of lives.

Good job on telling the FBI about your co-worker . . . wonder if he/she will be at work this week?

Yes it is so heartbreaking to see those pets suffering; a lot of them have owners out there somewhere who would be missing them too. Its awfully sad.

RE: VP Cheney and Lynne; I noticed him touching her too; I wondered if he was comforting her, or seeking comfort himself?

At least most people understand what's happening to them. Those poor animals are not quite wild, yet not quite human. Instincts will take over and they will be fine as long as they are running loose—for a while. But then something will have to be done.

I keep wondering what I would do in that situation. My first responsibility is to my children, so I would probably have to leave the pets behind in order to ensure a dry, safe place for them. That makes it even sadder.

Not only was the federal response NOT slow....The number of bodies is a fraction of what was predicted ....The pumps are emptying the bowl faster than they expected. The airport will be open for commercial traffic in a week.

Some folks could be going back much sooner than they expect....Much of NOLA was NOT flooded and suffered little damage.
