PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: After the President and First Lady attended church in Washington this morning, they participated in a September 11, 2001 rememberance and moment of silence on the White House lawn. GWB then headed for New Orleans where he touched down mid-afternoon. He will be spending the night aboard the USS Iwo Jima, which is docked in New Orleans harbor near downtown.

The President was met by New Orleans Mayor Nagin, but Gov. Kathleen Blanco was not present.

A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

Four years have passed since our country was brutally attacked on a quiet September morning. On that day, thousands of innocent lives were taken from us. The victims and the families who lost loved ones remain in the hearts and prayers of our Nation. We also remember the courage of the firefighters, police officers, emergency rescue personnel, and scores of private citizens who showed us the true meaning of heroism and demonstrated our resolve to the world.

The mission that began on September 11, 2001, continues. Today, we see the virtue of the September 11th heroes embodied in our military personnel, who are taking the fight to our enemies and helping to keep us safe at home. Thousands of other Americans, from intelligence analysts to border guards to countless others, are doing vital work to help defend America and prevent future attacks. We are grateful to all of these men and women and to their families for their service and sacrifice. We honor those who have lost their lives defending our freedom, and we pray that God comfort their families. We pledge that we will not rest until we have won the war on terror.

As we mark this solemn anniversary, I call upon all our citizens to express their patriotism and their gratitude for the blessings of liberty. By flying the flag, supporting military families, and teaching young people about our founding ideals, we honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and since, and we help preserve our freedom for future generations.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107 89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day."

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2005, as Patriot Day. I call upon the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half staff on Patriot Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe Patriot Day with appropriate ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services, to display the flag at half staff from their homes on that day, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. eastern daylight time to honor the innocent victims who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this ninth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirtieth.

It is about how supposedly, behind closed doors, Bush is TOTALLY different than we see....really hard to work for, and his employees are AFRAID of him...????? I just cannot believe it...but, where does this come from???

Hi Wolf, On the San Diego local news, a plane load of cats and dogs from the La. area in carriers brought here to centers for medical help. Also a few days ago several folks from the various Human Societies and other agencies here left in trailers to help pets in the flood areas.

That's great news, Pol. I know we Californians catch a lot of guff from other FReepers around the country, but we do have big hearts in situations like this.

In my post about the rescued dogs, I should have said it was Los Angeles County Fire Search and Rescue who picked up that poor dog. He was standing on some wooden debris between two buildings. He looked thin, and probably only had that dirty water to drink. I don't think he was a purebred Lab. To big, and his head had hints of Boxer or maybe pit bull -- hard to tell via TV. Friendly guy. Just scared. But once the firefighters coaxed him over, he got into the boat as calm as you please, then rode on the bow all the way out.

Sad thing is, many of the rescued animals will never be reunited with their owners, so unless they get adopted, they'll wind up being put down anyway. But at least they aren't facing a slow, horrible death in that stricken city.

Our mayor in Biloxi,AJ Holloway,didn't decamp during the hurricane to some safe place with AC-he stayed to be available for the Emergency personnel. He stayed here in the heat and the same conditions as the rest of us,and when he toured the city after the wind died,he was in shock and then tears. But he got it together right quick and began working with our Governor and the emergency teams to maintain law and order(quickly assuring citizens that they could defend themselves and their property as is their Constitutional right),and getting relief aid in as fast as humanly possible. People in my own neighborhood were immediately out with chain saws clearing fallen trees from the road,and staying close to home otherwise,as requested.Mayor Holloway stayed right here in the heat and humidity like the rest of us,not even to make a point,but to do his job.

Awwwwww...a photo I wish I could see. I care a lot about all the people hurt and displaced by acts of nature. But the Good Lord saw fit to make me with a very tender heart when it comes to animals. What can I say.

America did a great job faced with this unprecedented storm and the horrid imcompetence of the locals in Louisiana. Thank you Coast Guard, thank you locals. thank you NG, thank you first responders. Thank you New York and California and Texas and all who helped. Thank you.

As far as I'm concerned, you could never post that enough, and would never be annoying in doing so.

I am truly disgusted that, in the MSM drama-queen rush to yell about how "slow" the response was, and with the rush of bottom-feeding politicans to pile on for their own advantage, the monumentally heroic job the first responders did is being overshadowed.

One more thing...the one thing that the dems can not overcome is similar to the thing that so frustrated us about Bill Clinton. The likability factor. This is their attempt at taking that away "He really isn't likable, its all an act."

So they have created a storyline for themselves. I went and read the Thomas article. It is just so much BS. I don't doubt his sources...just his interpretation of his sources. Thomas is also frustrated that so many in the administration are so loyal to the President and therefore will not talk to him.

People are not loyal to a tyrant. Look at the unprecedented lack of turnover as evidence.

Bush is a man you would be happy to call friend...and to whom you would be loyal as a boss.

I suspect many will be offered homes. They were saying on FNC they are looking for people who are willing to look after them for 3 months whilst they try to find their owners and then after that if they cannot be traced they will be able to keep them.

It is settled wisdom among journalists that the federal response to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina was unconscionably slow.

"Mr. Bush's performance last week will rank as one of the worst ever during a dire national emergency," wrote New York Times columnist Bob Herbert in a somewhat more strident expression of the conventional wisdom.

But the conventional wisdom is the opposite of the truth.

Jason van Steenwyk is a Florida Army National Guardsman who has been mobilized six times for hurricane relief. He notes that:

"The federal government pretty much met its standard time lines, but the volume of support provided during the 72-96 hour was unprecedented. The federal response here was faster than Hugo, faster than Andrew, faster than Iniki, faster than Francine and Jeanne."
