Please sign the online petition to stop the killing of pets in New Orleans. Conflicting reports abound, regarding whether orders have been given to shoot abandoned pets. But just in case it is or becomes true, please sign the online petitions below to STOP the killing:

And the following petition adds the words "and their pets" to the order to evacuate people from New Orleans. Please sign it also:

"How about those wanting to save all the animals in NO go to their Local Animal Shelter and adopt one of the pets they have available TODAY!
A wonderful way to pay homage to those pets that will have been unfortunately lost to Hurricane Katrina in some form or another.
BET YOU DON'T DO IT!"
I am all maxed out at my home right now with lots of adopted animals. Good idea though. Perhaps all of us animal lovers could try to do something. Like take vans, trucks down there and bring back animals to our local pet stores and they could each all over the country find a couple homes for some little critters found in NO. They could even make some money selling them to the kindhearted and sympathetic American public. Really good idea I think because many of the big pet food chains and the small private one do take lots of cats and dogs in and selling them find homes for them from out of area Humane Societies and private people helping critters.
I've found one dog that I want already....;))

In defense of Benjamin, he didn't really mean that like it came out.
He's stuck behind enemy lies in Beantown with NO Fox News right now.
He's really quite a decent fellow.
[Toldja Ben...there's lots of manly men who love their critters big time, too]...;))
"Oh - I know myself better than to even look. If I went near a shelter I'd go broke bringing them all home, dogs, cats, horses, birds"
Been there, done that.
The local shelter turned a blind eye to the fact that I was adopting the unwanteds, rehabilitating them and giving to them to friends and family.
[which violated the "must keep or return to shelter" rule.
The shelter director knew they were going to good lives rather than death and was glad for it then she retired and a new "stiff" director came in and that was the end of that]
I couldn't number how many dogs I took away from "death row".
"What is it about some folks that compels them to jump into a discussion where OTHER people are discussing something of great importance to THEM, and attack, insult, demean, ridicule, and dismiss things that are important to THEM?"
Best question I've seen posed on FR in very long time.
What a pity that we'll never get an honest answer to it.
PetsMarts stores have been doing that for years.
Every weekend the sidewalks are filled with adoptable dogs from local no-kill shelters.
The whole back room is full of cats and kittens from the same.
Their success rate is admirable.
that was disgusting
LOL... me too.
I talked with the Governor's office this morning. They said the Coast Guard had rescued approx. 500 animals yesterday. They were setting up tent shelters with fans for the animals, and training college students to care for them.
I agree. I don't think I've seen a single dog in a TV spot that I would be afraid of. A couple of them were barking at the cameras, but they were just scared, and after tossing them a couple bites of liver, they would be friendly enough, I'm sure.
Anyone who knows dogs well can tell which dogs are to be feared. And it's not very many.
A team from the Oregon Humane Society went into a house and rescued 3 Pit Bulls that were all chained up with no food or water. The male had eaten most of the couch and his chain was wound up in the couch springs and that he had only 10 inches of chain left to move around. They easily rescued the three dogs, having to use bolt cutters on the chains, and carrying the dogs down the ladder.
I'm sorry I touched such a nerve. Your stories of the animals you have taken in prove my point that animals that have been through rough times can be saved and many times make the best pets.
Every animal I have rescued I have taken care of and provided a home for during the entire course of its natural life. I know all about the horrors that animals may have to endure to survive on the streets or in disasters. I also know that animals are survivors, and if we will do our best to save as many pets as possible, we may be amazed by some of the incredible stories we hear.
I am sorry if you felt like you had been attacked and needed to retaliate by taking a condescending, rude attitude with me. Others on this thread have expressed an opinion that the animals are now ruined. In your post that I initally responded to, it was clear you are an animal lover, and I was alarmed that you too were misinformed that ten days of surviving on its own ruins a pet. Some pets may need to be put down for their sake and the sake of society, but the vast majority of these pets can be and should be saved.
Signed & BTTT.
Prayers also said for ALL of God's creatures (humans AND animals) in New Orleans, Biloxi, and other areas that were hit by Katrina.
Thanks for posting this information.
The rescue shelters really need CRATES. Wire crates and shipping crates, but mostly wire crates because it's hot and the wire crates have better air circulation. There's no air conditioning in most of those places. They need size LARGE crates, which can hold large dogs and/or multiple small dogs/cats. The larger dogs don't have enough room in the crates they have.
Please spread the word. Anyone able to donate crates - preferably ship them overnight. Ask local pet shops if they will DONATE the crates. Ask shippers if they will DONATE shipping. Here are addresses to just two shelters that need crates:
Gonzales Temporary Animal Shelter (housing over 2000 animals already)
9093 Saint Landry Road
Gonzales, LA 70737
Or this triage center:
Jefferson Feed (handles 30-200 animals a day)
4421 Jefferson Highway
Jefferson, LA 70121
According to the UPS website, these two zip codes should be receiving UPS shipments if you want to ship by UPS.
Much of what I'm reading says dog food companies have donated tons of food, so they don't need food. For now, just ship CRATES, size LARGE.
I called Jefferson Feed and spoke with them directly, and she said they need CRATES and that's about all. She didn't even say they needed money. (Wow.)
There are other shelters opening up. The Coast Guard rescued about 500 animals yesterday, and they're setting up tent shelters with fans for them, and teaching college students to care for the animals. So some rescues are continuing.
If you can't get a business to donate crates, and you can't afford one yourself, then pool your money with other dog/cat owners and get at least one crate. Children could raise enough money for a crate in a couple hours selling lemonaid (KatrinaAid). People will pay $5 or $10 or $20 for a cup of lemonaid if they know the money is going to help rescue Katrina pets.
Thanks for your compassion, and please spread the word, both on and off FR.
Thank you for the update. That's good news.
Continental Airlines is flying evacuated pets out of Houston for FREE if they are travelling with their owners. It is normally about a $75 fee each way, and a shipping crate is required.
Additionally, I called Continental Airlines' cargo department. They said they would ship TO Houston, for FREE, any CRATES donated to help those evacuees relocate FROM Houston with their pets. All you have to do is take the crate(s) to the Cargo department of any Continental location and tell them it needs to be shipped to Houston. You don't need to ship it to a specific person - Continental will disperse the crates to needy families so they can evacuate Houston with their pets. They cannot give donation receipts though - they are obviously not 501(c)3.
This is completely separate from the huge need for crates at the rescue shelters in Louisana and Mississippi. The rescue shelters are housing rescued pets as well as pets brought in by owners who are in temporary shelters themselves. The owners are required to feed/water/exercise their pets twice a day. The shelter volunteers care for all the rescued pets. They are getting more rescued pets in every hour and they need crates to house them until their owners can be found or they can be relocated to more permanent foster situations.
Again, spread the word far and wide. Thank you.
Story of a dog who stayed with his murdered owner for 4-5 days. Owner lay on the pavement at the convenience store/gas station and the dog lay with him, refusing to eat, refusing to leave:

God bless the Coast Guard.
And God bless you too.
