Please sign the online petition to stop the killing of pets in New Orleans. Conflicting reports abound, regarding whether orders have been given to shoot abandoned pets. But just in case it is or becomes true, please sign the online petitions below to STOP the killing:

And the following petition adds the words "and their pets" to the order to evacuate people from New Orleans. Please sign it also:

On three sides they have mesh field fence. On one side they have 5 strands of heavy gauge electric wire... very adequate for horses, but I don't think it is good enough for goats. I'm on a busy road so I'd hate to have them get out.
I also have coyotes back there.... they are no threat to the horses, but I've been cautious about getting anything that would just be an attractive target.
So... I'll probably have to keep mowin' my own brush :~D
Wow! I can't believe my posts were removed!
They should of remove you sonny.

Honore says his soldiers will now be helping to evacuate pets from New Orleans
Lt. Gen. Russel Honore, commander of Task Force Katrina, said in a news conference Friday that soldiers are going to start evacuating pets left behind in New Orleans.
Honore said the soldiers will also start helping to evacuate the pets of people who have refused to leave New Orleans unless their animals are allowed to go with them.
He said that soldiers are being given cages with which to take the pets to a collection point, where they will be picked up by animal relief agencies.
Don't know if you saw this. I have been greatly encouraged by the outpouring of relief workers helping the animals in NO.
Well if things ever change on goats, let me know.
I agree, it is a very sad thing, and it just compounds the grief of the poor evacuees.
2 strands of electric fence will easily do it!
I had a friend that had goats! They got out all the time, ending up down the street. Goats can get out, over and under fences that would keep a horse in. So I've been reluctant.
I've already apologized privately (and explained) to salamander, but you're too much of a newbie to bother with.
You really don't want to mix it up with me anyway sonny.
I never said dogs were human, however from my experience, they are many times more trust worthy than most people. As far as your comment about women and sex, I have no clue what you are talking about.
I've wanted a great big dog for a long time. But not until I get a woman and children first.
Sounds like a personal issue.
I'm pretty sure I have my priorities straight.
After the comment you made earlier on this thread, I don't think so.
You clearly implied that people that are into dogs are somehow punks and weak wussies. I'd like to bring you into my world for about an hour.
"You clearly implied that people that are into dogs are somehow punks and weak wussies"
No he did not do this. You have to twist what he said to get this out of it. But he obviously has less use for pets than you and I. So what? It's America.
We had one that would RUSH to the gate (it was an electric fence gate) and stare at it JUST IN CASE it was left unhooked. Because you see, "these people left it unhooked all afternoon once and I was able to get out. Never mind it was 3 years ago they did it. They just might slip up again and let it unhooked. And I must check EVERY time. Even if I am so hungry for that feed they bring i."
Crazy old goat!
She weighed 210 pounds.
If you stuck your tongue out at her she would instantly stick hers out back at you!
My mom and 2 of my 3 sisters were scared of her because of her size. She sensed that and would rear up on her hind legs and dance threateningly at them whenever they went into her pen. A 210 pound goat on her hind legs is TALL! But she never did it to a person who was not scared of her. And she never, ever butted anyone.
It was a sad day when she got so old and decrepite that I had to take her out back and shoot her. I cried but that is the harsh reality of life.
It is sad that these animals have to suffer and that they have been separated from their owners but in the big scheme of things saving those animals is a very low priority.
May the claws of 1000 tom cats...
Bullets are NOT cruel. If you want to save one, by all means, go and get one then, pay the vet fees that will be required, take it home and feel good about yourself.
Yes, really. As someone deeply involved in animal rescue for years, I assure you I know infinitely more about what's going on in this arena than do you. We're getting MANY MANY emails and calls and faxes from all over the country from people willing to go in at their own risk and at their own cost. And to be clear, nobody is asking the government to cover the costs. Privately funded volunteers are what we're talking about here.
Society is and always has comprised many different groups with myriad passions. We don't stop prosecuting white collar crime because murderers are on the street. The need to catch a rapist doesn't mean every other type of crime investigation is put on hold. It takes many different endeavors on many different levels for society to run, and as I already said, it's not a zero-sum game. People need not be sacrificed or the rescue efforts hindered in any way to do this.

You're wrong. Some are and some aren't. Were I in a rescue boat and had O.J. Simpson in the water by the hand and Lassie by the leash in the other, I 'd slip my grip on the "Juice" and commend him to the flood and welcome Lassie aboard. If it was Bill Clinton and "Buddy", well the answer is obvious to me, "So long Bill".The statement that every human is worth more than every animal is simply not true.
I have used my horse and dog on search and rescue missions in cooperation with the local sheriff's dept. We are usually looking for kids or lost hikers. I think that the type of humans that permeate these save/not save pet threads will now cause me to give pause the next time someone wants me to use my own time and risk my horse and smart dog looking for their lost relatives. Especially if I knew it was one of you.
Except "BigCamAddict.
They were pouring gas on puppies and kittens as kids, lighting the poor creatures on fire and later that night, wetting the bed. Now they throw "Puppy Bombs" on animal rescue threads and go to the can a lot.
I'm appalled by the attitude that ten days of surviving on its own ruins a pet. I've rescued feral cats as well as dogs that have been on the streets. It is quite doable.
Many of those poor creatures are sweet, gentle family pets. You can tell immediately which ones are vicious and which ones are not. Let the animal rescuers do all they can. Shooting should be a last (and terrible) resort...
