Target and the Salvation Army

Posted on 09/09/2005 5:33:27 AM PDT by KenmcG414

This past Christmas season Target stores forbade the Salvation Army from seeking contributions. Now the Salvation Army is front and center helping the victims of Katrina...where is Target. I did not see any mention of this in the media outlets.

A little googling would help. From:http://target.com/target_group/community_giving/partnerships.jhtml

Target has partnered with the American Red Cross for over a decade on disaster relief, most recently in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. As part of the relief effort, Target has announced a $1.5 million donation to the Red Cross, with $500,000 going for immediate relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina, and an additional $1 million for ongoing disaster relief and preparedness.

In addition to cash contributions, Target is offering much-needed real estate in Louisiana to the Red Cross to establish a central command center supporting the most heavily impacted areas of the storm.

For additional information on disaster recovery efforts, visit www.redcross.org.

OK, so Celine Dion has donated almost as much, but it's a lot more than I can share.

They've partnered with the RC....wonder if that's why the bell ringers weren't allowed at Target.

I suppose Target was distracted by the vital essentials involved with the sale of it's Mervins assets(most of the
Colorado Mervins stores are being shut down). But you are spot on target--and I did notice Wal-Mart(for all the evil spoken of that chain) was among the first responders and
among the business that have contributed the most?Target
was apparantly in a dither overthe public notice that they
discriminate against Sally's

Haven't darkened Target's doors since they stopped letting the Salvation Army's Christmas Kettles on their premises. They became one of the "Hug a Homo" club.

Note: The current use of Gay is PC and I refuse to be PC, I could have also used Fag/Faggot(Uniquely American), but didn't want our overseas English friends thinking Target was Pro-Smokers :)

Target didn't allow the Bell Ringers because Target is non-union. If they allowed the SA they would have to permit union organizers to lobby their employees outside the store 24/7.

The Red Cross is now putting out their own kettles in stores, unstaffed for now. You hit it on the head, it's a territory issue.

Target sold in 2004 to an investment group that included Sun Capital Partners Inc., Cerberus Capital Management LP and Lubert-Adler/Klaff and Partners LP.
California-based Mervyns is closing nearly a quarter of its department stores nationwide.

Gee, now I am glad that I go to Target all the time. Of course, I am not one to boycott because someone told me to.

It's sad because the issue got blown way out of proportion. By law if they allow anyone to solicit outside their stores they have to allow the unions to do the same.

Wal-mart is non-union and they still let the bell ringers solicit...it's going to bite them in the someday.

Walmart is non-union too and they allow bell ringers and the kettles. The unstated reason Target won't allow the kettles is because the Salvation Army is a Christian organization and will not give same-sex partner benefits.

My wife is a manager at a Target in Panama City. She and her employees have been working at the local churches after their shift serving food. In addition to the 1.5 Million that the corporation donated, the local store donated thousands more to the local shelters and Red Cross. They also provided all the boxes used to pack and ship several semi-trailers full of water, diapers, food, etc. Last Monday my wife used her truck to transport 80 cases of water, donated by target, to the local shelter.

Target also is allowing all their employees from the flood areas to go to other target stores for employment, whether the store needed the additional employees or not. Target has also been identified as the US Company that does the most for local communities.

I knew more stories would come in. I don't like to see lazy uninformed bashing of decent corporate citizens. This post is an awful lot like the NEA WalMart boycott crap.

OK, so why did they kick out the Salvation Army bell ringers?

I don't agree with that one.

The problem is that Target has a no soliciting rule on their premises. They made an exception for the Salvation Army, but other organizations threatened to sue them if they continued selective enforcement of the policy. Target either had to allow groups like the "Gay and Lesbian Save the Whales and Trees to Prevent Gun Violence" society or enforce the ban uniformly.

I would have been tempted to fight it out in court, but then I'm not the CEO of a multi-million dollar corporation with a lot of stockholders to answer to.
