Part of New Orleans's southern charm comes from its green canopy of live oak trees. Many of those trees have been standing in water for more than a week, depriving their roots of oxygen.
(this is lead-in. Audio .wav file of the report at NPR site)

Although live oaks like their roots drier than cypress, they normally grow just above the wet stuff. In fact, one ways of knowing what the historial high land in NO was is look for the old, old oaks, like in City Park at the Dueling Oaks for instance.
Those trees might have been underwater briefly, but they aren't now.
Anyway, I suspect any trees able to grow next to wetlands can deal with getting wet from time to time.
Somebody ought to stop NPR's 02........
That darn Bush! He did it! (liberals screaming at the top of their lungs)...IT'S BUSH'S FAULT!!
Like oak trees falling over is paramount to the issues at hand. NPR at their leftist best...
LOL!
The White Oaks were all evacuated.
Cut it out CG! I'm dyin' here! ROTFL! Recon' they'll replace the lost oaks with Black Walnut trees?
Some men see a dead oak. I see a coffee table!
Reports have been circulating that White Oaks were uprooted and transplanted by Neocon Jooooosssss but Black Oaks where left to wallow in the muck.
There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas
Ain't that the truth.......question....we don't have a fireplace so I'm limited on what kind of wood you can use......I know oak is great for smoking meats and barbeque but can it be burned in a fireplace? I'm sure the snow birds up north would love to get some.......I saw where firewood is at an outrageous price. Pity me, we use propane for our heating...I may have to sell a grandchild to keep up this winter. (Of course I'm kidding about the grandchild)*~*
There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.
The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.
There is trouble in the forest,
And the creatures all have fled,
As the maples scream "Oppression!"
And the oaks just shake their heads
So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.
-The Trees, Lyrics by Neil Peart, recorded by Rush
Oak burns well and slow. Hickory is better for cooking.
We use that too........and mesquite, pecan, cherry.......whatever the wood man has on his lot at the time. Sure makes the meat taste good. *~*
Cherry is good if soaked in water first and added sparingly to Charcoal
Yep......we usually soak all the wood especially if it's been lying around for awhile. The newer, green wood most of the time doesn't need it.
I like hickory to be about a month dead.
Remember this is N.O. we're talking about here. The trees probably do vote democrat
