What would you have done?
This evening the wife of a gentleman running for our local school board stopped by my house (well situated on a corner) to ask if she could post campaign signs for her husband who was running for the local school board.
I didn't know either of them, so I said, "if you don't mind, first could you tell me what platform he's running on?"
"Oh," she said, "it's nothing strange. We moved here from out of state and have three girls and want to make sure that the school doesn't cut programs because of budget cuts. We're doing it for the children."
"Are you guys Republicans or Democrats?" I asked?
"Nonpartisan" she said.
"Hmm," I said, "I'll tell you what. I'm a fairly conservative Republican. I think that property taxes are already out of control and we're spending too much money on a failed system of public education. The last thing our schools need are more 'programs'. So thanks for stopping by, but I honestly don't think that I can support your platform."
She seemed shocked - but left.
What would you have done?
Would have done what you did... find out if you support the candidate before you put him on your lawn...
A reasoned and reasonable response.
What would I have done?
I won't have posted it here, for starters.
You did just fine.
I would have been standing behind you yelling, "Smackdown!" as I slammed the door.
But I'm one of those unsocialized homeschooling mothers.
Here's my jaded view:
"funding for school programs" = we want to raise property taxes to fund programs that you will read about and ask 'what the bleep?'
"nonpartisan" = we're liberals and know we're unpopular and the minority, so we don't want to admit it.
When I hear "bi-partisan" or "non-partisan;" that's not the candidate for me.
I would have done exactly what you did.
No putting those signs here.
If something similar happens, I hope I remember how adroitly you handled it.
Well said!
Sounds like you did great!
You did a great job. Now check with the others running and see what their platforms are. Or start a campaign to cut school spending.
They're doing it for the children..
Panic Alert !!!!
I might have been arrested for waving a shotgun in their face..
I despise political signs all over front yards anyway so I guess I'll have to say I agree with you.
Exactly what you did. You hit it out of the park
I have a "No Soliciting" sign on my door. I'd've told her I couldn't support a school board candidate who couldn't get his wife to learn to read.
Give her a break.
Would that be the Board of Education?
Although you handled it the right way, I would have probably said "Great! Get me as many of your signs as you can and I will make sure they get the treatment they deserve". The local garbage truck would be a little fuller on its next pick-up.
Give her an 'Al Bundy'.
Say absolutely nothing for about 2 seconds... then just slam the door shut.
