Public Skeptical New Orleans Will Recover Criticism, but little outrage, for Bush's and federal agencies' response to hurricane

by David W. Moore

GALLUP NEWS SERVICE

...

Despite widespread criticism of the response by Bush and, separately, the federal government, to the problems caused by the hurricane, the public seems on balance only mildly critical. Forty-two percent say Bush did a "bad" (18%) or "terrible" (24%) job, but 35% rate his response as either "great" (10%) or "good" (25%).

...

When asked to identify who was most responsible for the problems in New Orleans after the hurricane, 38% of Americans said no one was really to blame, while 13% cited Bush, 18% the federal agencies, and 25% state and local officials.

...

Few Americans feel that any top official in the agencies responsible for handling emergencies should be dismissed from office -- just 29% say someone should be fired, while 63% disagree.

Looks like this whole story by the MSM is doing about as well as Dan Rather's National Guard Memo.

Unfortunately, Hurricane Katrina really did exist.

They saw the Gov crying, Mary threatening violence and the Mayor cursing.

Good Lord, we've got EYEBALLS for God's sake.

We know what we saw out here in la-la land.

The thing about this disaster, Americans are paying attention.

Come on, those people who carry this country on their backs have children to get to soccer practice, jobs requiring concentration and hey, maybe some relaxation. We're just not going to get buried in passion in the Valerie Plame story.

This story playing out on our national stage affects us average guys, the soccer moms, the families across the fruited plain. We too could be caught in such a disaster. So we're paying attention.

We see what we see, for God's sake. A bunch of dolts jumping up and down like monkeys, the whole lot of them.

Hillary calling for a commission, Sean Penn rescuing people on a leaking dinghy, Naginhead's famous buses-under-the-water scene.

All of them acting like hyenas during a disaster that would like only affect US.

The dummies who carry this country on our backs.

Good God, it just ain't gonna fly.

On the other hand even Bush lovers might say he should have taken charge from the very beginning (in spite of laws and procedures)

I know this really surprises a LOT of people. The President HAS to obey the law. The City and State authorities HAVE to tell the Fed what is going on. Considering the violence that so grabbed the Media's attention happened on Wed, it is ridiculous to demand that ANYONE, must less a President with thousands of demands on his time, be CLAIRVOYENT. For what anyone watching TV knew the State has 5000 NG troops heading in. It wasn't until THURSDAY that we found out Blanco was only sending in 300 troops? Then on Friday, Bush goes down and slaps sense in to Blanco and gets her to accept deployment US Combat Troops. So what is this desperate need for some people to ignore the complete collapse of the 1st Responders (City of NO) and the ineptness of the 2nd Responders (State of LA) to freak out at the FEDS for NOT being MINDREADERS???????

And the idiotic Hillary Clinton is calling for Congressional Hearings on this...go ahead!! It will show the world that the Democrats, especially those in control in NO and LA are a bunch of bumbling fools...not good Hillary...you are about to shoot yourself on the foot!

Uh, oh... Time for the MSM to up the hysteria! I expect they'll begin speaking in tongues and having seizures on air any moment now.

Hillary...you are about to shoot yourself on the foot!

Man, I gotta smile.

Just when more people than ever are paying attention they're gonna expose corruption, bad management....the whole bit of it:

where the federal levee funds really went

why the buses weren't used to evacuate people

the mess and mire that is Lousiana

it goes on and on.

Hildebeeste is calling for this commission because her PR people believe they are still blessed and can still affect the public's perception of events.

There simply are not enough words that can say why this won't work.

We got EYEBALLS.

Somebody tell them this.

I'm still waiting for more info if combining Homeland Security and FEMA did slow down response. My only criticism of President Bush is that he hired the incompetent Michael Brown. There was a very slow response in Mississippi and Alabama, much as some try to deny it.

I think the folks who stayed in Orleans for the Hurricane fell into 3 categories. First, those who simply didn't understand the damage and threat of a hurricane...those who simply thought they'd wait it out in their house like typical storms. Second, those possibly didn't have cars...and expected someone from the Federal government to carry them out (which isn't the norm for any hurricane). And third...those who anticipated a great robbery and crime chance...and just plain knew cops wouldn't stop them. NO is special...its not Miami or Houston or Charleston. NO is loaded with people who are simply waiting for their next welfare check...and live from month to month off that. They may seem shocked...but folks in Florida live through this all the time.

I wish someone in Media would say okc & wtc Bombing was just a few building and this is from Al. coast to La. coast. And Mississippi from coast to top of State thousands and thousands of miles. Only the North Weat corner of Mississippi did not get any damage. Lets get real here people. I live in Pearl, Ms. and it is 3 hours from coast and we was out of power for 4 days. We had power people (from Al. Ga. Penn. & Ms.) just our city alone working 24/7. When i seen damage in our city I never thought we would get power back that soon. And still in Rankin County some still do not have power. Hattiesburg was was like a War Zone and it's only 1 hr. to 45 mins. from coast. Camp Shelly is South of Hattiesburg and National Guards had to cut there out. Thank GOD for Haley Barbour (Our Gov.) the National Guards and all the power co. and people who came to help us. For that we are very thankful.

Finally, I asked a bunch of them who they blamed -- and to a person, they said the governor and mayor.

That's refreshing to hear. I sit near 3 cubicles full of bubble-headed Democrats and I'm sick to death of hearing them blame the Feds for everything from hurricanes to athelete's foot.

It got bad enough the other day that I pretty much told them to shut up and get back to work, and I'm not even their boss.

That is just plain BEAUTIFUL, Howlin!

We gotta start giving the American people a little more credit.

As Rush just said, people don't think of this politically, they think of it AS A HURRICANE. Blaming Bush for it is just plain silly to anyone with a modicum of common sense.

The MSM really overplayed it this time, and the left is going to sink farther and farther into the mire because of it......

I keep thinking of the Greek myth where Hercules cleaned out the Augean stables by grabbing a river and diverting it so that it washed through the stables and cleaned out all the manure. But in this case it looks like a lake (Ponchartrain) that's going to be cleaning the stables out.

Saying everything we've said.

The American people are NOT as divided or driven by hate as the MSM/Dems pols are. I'd include the Reps pols, but most of them have the attitude of "can't we all just get along?", rather than seething hatred. I'd wager McCain's little head could blow with right provocation, but's the minority.

The American people, ALL they wanted, was to come together and help these people. That's what we did. The MSM/Dems just couldn't bring themselves to do that. They are the problem.

Rush-Wellstone memorial x 10

And I'd like to know when the American people are going to have the ability to investigate the Congress. When can we have a town hall forum to go after them? Elections don't cut it.

There was a mandatory evac...but you have your facts wrong. POTUS called Governor Blanco, and the head of the National Hurricane Center called Nagin. Nagin called for a mandatory evac...Saturday night 12 am.

Exactly.

And as soon as we figure out how to get Congress to take their own share of the responsibility for this mess, it will be a bright day.
