The definitive list of New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin's "genuinely heroic" decisions

Louisiana disaster plan, pg 13, para 5 , dated 01/00

'The primary means of hurricane evacuation will be personal vehicles. School and municipal buses, government-owned vehicles and vehicles provided by volunteer agencies may be used to provide transportation for individuals who lack transportation and require assistance in evacuating'...

On an earlier FR thread, we learned that the BBC has determined that Ray Nagin, mayor of the devastated city of New Orleans, Louisiana, has "genuinely heroic" qualities. I've started this thread to make it easy to keep track of those decisions of Mayor Nagin that can only be described as heroic. The list begins in post #1 below. Feel free to continue it if you find that I've overlooked any of Mayor Nagin's stunningly courageous and far-sighted decisions.

He chose the more traditional fried oysters instead of shrimp on his po' boy sandwich.

Since this mayor thing hasn't worked out so well for Nagin, he had to demonstrate his street cred before launching his future rap career.

Has anyone ever seen Nagin and Kanye West in the same location? Hmmm....

Nagin and the other New Orleans leaders have known for years that the hurricane cycle is in an uptick. They've known for years that parts of New Orleans could be submerged for a long time.

Why hadn't Nagin made sure that New Orleans had a housing code that required inflatable lifeboats to be stored inside each residence? If they didn't mandate lifeboats, why didn't they mandate life vests? The landlords should have been required to supply them.

I imagine they required fire escapes for two story buildings.

I think we should focus on the relief effort and save the blame game for later.

And sit back while the left attacks our president as a racist? Get real!!!

Good points, good questions. Maybe they'll be made and asked at an inquiry down the line, although I'm not hopeful about that.

Bush declares emergency in Louisiana (Hurricane Katrina)

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush declared a state of emergency in Louisiana on Saturday because of the approach of Hurricane Katrina and his spokesman urged residents along the coast to heed authorities' advice to evacuate.

Bush, vacationing at his ranch, was being regularly updated about the storm, which is expected to hit land early Monday, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.

Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency continue to coordinate with state authorities in Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama, and have prepositioned supplies in areas expected to be affected, he said.

The president's emergency declaration authorizes the FEMA to coordinate all disaster relief efforts and to provide appropriate assistance in a number of Louisiana parishes, or counties.

Authorities told residents of low-lying coastal communities to head for higher ground. The storm was expected to strengthen as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico and could become a Category 4 hurricane with wind of at least 131 mph.

"We urge residents in the areas that could be impacted to follow the recommendations of local authorities," McClellan said.

He demonstrated heroic cleverness by fleeing to Baton Rouge ahead of the storm.

When danger reared its ugly head
He bravely turned his tail and fled.

So we just let the MSM and the left in general spew their lies and beat up on the administration unimpeded, not me pal.

Thanks. I'm just a bit miffed at these FReepers who stand so mighty in their singular summary of priorities, even while under vicious attacks from the rats.

Even the National Guard is finding out that you should be taking out the snipers while you are executing a successful rescue.
