Just look at the environmental catastrophe in progress there. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE BUSES W/OUT EXCEPTION should've been drained of environmentally unfriendly fluids, this is an absolute travesty. Clearly George Bush has no concerns whatsoever about ANYTHING and certainly not for ANY of the gooslings and geeslings who will be impacted by this. PETA should be ALL OVER THIS, fish feel pain too you know.

I wouldn't mind paying attention to those who want to criticize FEMA or other federal agencies if they weren't so intent on completely absolving the mayor and governor of any responsibility. First we had to put up with the argument that Democrats were too dumb to vote and the ballots in Florida were a Republican plot, now we have to put up with the argument that Democrats who are elected officials in Louisiana are too dumb to plan and execute an evacuation and that Republicans should have stepped in.

I wondered if NO had public transit.
I figured it did.
That is BEYOND ridiculous!

****

ITA! They had an excellent public transit system. My husband & I used it when we visited my SIL before she moved (thank God) I read somewhere else, at least 364 buses (as of 2002).

I counted at least 400. Each of these buses could have carried at least 50 people to safety. That's 20,000!

He would have been required to shelter all those he picked up. Got any idea where?
And another thing - who is going to drive these buses? Nobody has yet to answer me that question.
You are talking about civil servants/union employees and you think they will drive around the city and pick up poor people for free? You do know the Mayor can't order them to do that because it is a violation of their labor contract, right?
Everyone seems to forget a) HE'S A NEW MAYOR WHO WAS INVESTIGATING CORRUPTION FROM PREVIOUS NO ADMINISTRATIONS (CLUE HERE: THE LEFT WANTS TO THROW HIM UNDER THE PROVERBIAL BUS) and b) He was lied to by the female Feminazi and her Landrieu mafia about evac plans and NG coming c) he supported the Governor's opponent for Governor (Rindahl) and he supported Bush when he ran against Kerry.
Who are you going to believe? I'll go with Nagin, actually. They played politics and they are trying to kill off a good man who strayed off the plantation one toe at a time.

You are right.
30% of the cops walked off, leaving their fellow officers to fend for themselves.
Real nice.

Greyhound buses wouldn't "stall" because a mayor forced a union civil servant to save people.
Mayor should throw everyone to the wolves. I was mad at first, but as this was unfolding (I've been on them since Saturday cuz family is in Gulfport), it became so clear that he was being ham-strung.

Anybody know where there's a link to a copy of that so-called "disaster plan"? I expect there are more gems in there.

Except when Lawton Chiles was Governor.
Then they blamed President Bush I.
See how this works?
As long as there is a Bush in office, they are responsible for all disasters.

Landrieu, Senator.
Landrieu, Lt. Gov.
Landrieu, Former Mayor of NO.
All of them are three different family members.
Mary Landrieu, Tuesday:
"I want as much if not more money than New York got for 9/11" No mention of dead people or recovery or food.
Governor last night: "I've set up a fund you can donate to for NO".
These people should be strung up and shot.
The mayor is going to sing. Trust me.

Where the people were driven on buses that should have evacuated them before the hurricane is something that should have been negotiated beforehand with the governor. Galveston has clear evacuation plans drawn up with who drives, where the buses are, where they are going, etc, all planned out years ago. We shouldn't have to assume that just because the place is run by Democrats that they are incompetent.

I had posted on one of the Hurricane Katrina threads on Freerepublic that one reason to stop contra-flow on Sunday was allow more buses in. I assumed that the Louisiana government had its act together, and was planning more buses to arrive to evacuate people. I will post a link to my remarks later...

It just made sense at the time... Police escort could have guaranteed the people would have made it to safety...

The post I was referring to:

Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V [Post 1030 of 2457]

Regarding Contraflow...

At some point, you may have to get additional things into a threatened area. If there are additional buses and other supplies that can be moved in, then you need the Southbound direction open.

Some folks in charge had better be organized and know what they are doing. This is one mean lady (Hurricane Katrina). Let's hope for a Lili scenario (Cat 3 storm diminishes to Cat 1 just before landfall).

[And for someone who asked, contraflow means that both sides of a Freeway or Interstate are used to go in one direction -- using all four lanes for evacuation]

I was sadly mistaken to think that the Mayor of New Orleans or the Governor of Louisiana was busy trying to get needed supplies into the city and buses for getting people out...

There was still time Sunday night to move buses in and get people out... Stupidity must be a virtue in the Democratic Party or at least in Louisiana. The Landrieu family seems to have the greatest stupidity, I do declare.

Moon Landrieu being the former mayor planted seeds long ago. If they were good seeds, then good people would have responded, even with the bad mayor of today...

It is a shame that the former Republican governor stepped down because of term limits last election. I honestly believe he would save alot more lives and would not have been the whimp the current woman governor of Louisiana is...
