I just wish someone would have used the precious time on Sunday to get people out, or to be better prepared...
They could have just relieved themselves on the floor of the bus as they did in the SuperDome.

At some point, you may have to get additional things into a threatened area. If there are additional buses and other supplies that can be moved in, then you need the Southbound direction open.
Some folks in charge had better be organized and know what they are doing. This is one mean lady (Hurricane Katrina). Let's hope for a Lili scenario (Cat 3 storm diminishes to Cat 1 just before landfall).
[And for someone who asked, contraflow means that both sides of a Freeway or Interstate are used to go in one direction -- using all four lanes for evacuation]

Never ever trust a Rat.
If you have a caravan of 20 school buses, you can dispatch a single Police/State Police car as escort and one for the rear. You then can get other Police cars to take over responsiblity as the caravan gets further away from the evacuation area. (And the original police cars return to the evacuation area for more people.)
One scenario for the future might be to allow police cars to carry police family members to safety (turn around point for the police cars to go back, and escort more buses out of the danger area).
In the future, I hope someone will heed the need for changing protocol and on trying to get people out...
There was still enough time to load buses at 6PM and leave New Orlenas by 8PM.
But it also requires people to take tough stands -- you can't let people take pets on a bus during an evacuation. Space is at a premium.
I am hoping some people might view this thread as helpful hints for the next time...

MAYOR CRITICIZED EVEN BEFORE LEVY BREAK. National Hurricane Center Director had to call Nagin at home Saturday night to plead: "Get people out of New Orleans." "The criticisms of Nagin came from above as well. Numerous officials urged him to evacuate the city, but he worried about the legality of ordering people out when New Orleans has few safe hurricane shelters. Also, National Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield in Miami called Nagin at home Saturday night and told him: Get people out of New Orleans.
''I could never sleep if I felt like I didn't do everything that I could to impress upon people the gravity of the situation,'' Mayfield said. ``New Orleans is never going to be the same.''
When a grim Nagin issued the mandatory evacuation order Sunday, he said: ``We are facing a storm that most of us have feared . . . God bless us.''

I understand your point.
We all complain about waiting and long lines in normal, day to day life. When a disaster strikes, those in charge of restoring services never do it promptly enough for the satisfaction of most.
To the most casual observer, Katrina, New Orleans, and Democrats have proved a most deadly mix.
As Katrina approached the elected "officials" froze, like a deer in a spotlight. They never even attempted to impliment the emergency evacuation plan they had, and their use of simple common sense was nonexistant.

'The primary means of hurricane evacuation will be personal vehicles. School and municipal buses, government-owned vehicles and vehicles provided by volunteer agencies may be used to provide transportation for individuals who lack transportation and require assistance in evacuating'..."
As the full extent of the storms wrath became evident the "plantation overseers", from their relative safety in Baton Rouge, began bellowing about the pain and suffering of the chattle they had left behind, as if somehow the federal government was responsible.
The truth to be known, had the federal government not insisted in declaring New Orleans a disaster area, a full 24 + hours before Katrina struck, Blanco and Nagin would probably never issued a mandatory evacuation order.
Alas, I ramble on, but like you, I am distraught that Democrats, as a political Party, are constantly being elected by these people (yes, that's what I said) and that those people don't see the harm the Democrats cause.
