President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

You are right. The camera kept panning to the crowd and they did not seem like people "about to blow" to me.

I've been listening to scanners from the area today and no matter how many people they move, more keep coming. FEMA and the feds were simply not told there were that many people left in the city. The numbers have skyrocketed each day and getting resources there to move the masses has been an unbelievably difficult task.

What many don't appreciate is that they must have someplace to take them. All these reporters are concentrating on is a few square block area on a patch of higher ground in New Orleans which is just one piece of this major disaster. Tunnel vision is not helping.

Shep, who has been on the bridge leading into the city center, Superdome, and convention center, says they haven't yet seen the Red Cross enter the city.

Here's a testimony of someone who got out who claims that the Red Cross has been ready to go in since Wed, waiting for clearance from the governor.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1475936/posts

I cannot vouch for its authenticity, but it certainly seems to fit with what appears to be a bureaucratic choke point at the state level. There have been lots of claims of failure to get timely clearance from the governor. Maybe there are other logistical roadblocks. Maybe it is something else.

Did anyone just hear the black guy on NBC telethon? He just said that George Bush doesn't care about black people. When white people take something they are getting food...when black people take it they are looting.

He's getting his a** kicked by the producers back stage. They are telling him now all the white folks won't donate, you idiot.

Mike Meyers was standing next to him and looked like he wanted to crawl off stage.

If "Refugees" is racist then the entire press core is racist

I am so angry at the media

They are intentionally trying to divided this country

Yes, there are thugs down there shooting at the rescuers and causing problems, that are black

But the whole dang black population down in NO are NOT Thugs and out of control criminals

This pisses me off to no end! BOR had NOTHING to do with the evac of Charit. (A little Nashville Pride here):

HCA completes evacuation of its N.O. hospital
Friday September 2, 3:06 pm ET

A fleet of helicopters hired by HCA Inc. to evacuate patients and staff from the company's Tulane University Hospital and Clinic in New Orleans have completed their mission.
The company hired 20 helicopters to evacuate nearly 200 patients and more than 1,200 employees and staff. HCA has now offered to pick up the tab for those helicopters to remain in service through the office of Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco to assist with the evacuation of nearby Charity Hospital's two facilities as well as the University Medical Center. Neither of those facilities is affiliated with Nashville-based HCA (NYSE: HCA - News).

DEVASTATING DAMAGE EXPECTED

If you read more of the reports, the eye of the storm barely left Mississippi 24 hours later. I don't see how they could of got supplies in much quicker. The only answer would of been to have stockpiles stashed someplace in NOLA.

Missed that - I was listening to the gentleman on Fox trying to explain how the hypothetical case of a looter with 5 big screen TV's in his living might have a good reason for it, and it might not REALLY be looting since he COULD be planning on bartering them for food.

P.S. Note to self: What will the great psychologists have to say about all this? Apparently, the Dome was sufficiently large enough to shelter many people. Ergo, the "rats" weren't overcrowded. The problem was some bad rats. How will the APA spin this one, I wonder.

I mean.. we already have PEST syndrome. What will this call this one .. with people in a building to shelter their lives, begin preying upon others. Hmm... (kinda sounds like the inner city, no?) Ahem. But what will they call it, I wonder...

I'm calling them and asking how to withdraw a contribution. A friend of mine is furious and wants her money back...I of course had told her not to give to the Red Cross in the first place.

"The Hyatt folks should be evacuated first,
How many Hyatt folks were dying compared to the number of dying people at the superdome"

Yankee stadium clears out every night in 1 hr despite NYC traffic - whyis it taking 5 days to get rid of this spctacle one half the size.

Frankly, I don't care what the Lamestream media or the race-baiters say. The LEFT REVEREND Jesse Jackson needs to go visit his love child and Al Sharpton proves every day that one doesn't need makeup to be a clown. As for Geraldo, wake me up when he finds something in Al Capone's Vault.

I heard...Mayor took over the Hyatt for his command office and brought in buses for the foreign tourists and told them to go to the front of the line. They weren't his friends but it was prob a payback.
