President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

"What happened with the mayors friends?"

This was an example of one of Shep Smith's teases. He teased the story at the bottom of the hour that the mayor moved "his friends" up in the line for the busses at the Superdome.

When he actually did the story, it turns out it was foreign guests staying at the Hyatt. I'm not sure that is properly characterized as "the mayor's friends", but that's what Shep had said.

The Tourists paid 25,000 for 10 buses days ago and those buses were comandeered by FEMA for evac. After notifying BBC press the tourist got the buses back and that's why they were sent to the front of the line. They PAID for these buses.
How can we know this info and these reporters don't.

Isn't that clock the most obnoxious thing you've ever heard in your entire life.

And the left making this a racial thing. I'm going to throw something. Has it occurred to ANYONE in the MSM that it is primarily white people rescuing Black people, and sometimes at the risk of being shot? How is the world is this racist?

Shep: The mayor made the busses come and pick up the out of town, rich tourists at the Hyatt Hotel, and put them at the front of the line, and made the citizens of NO (who are in squalor and in desperate need of medical assistance) wait. Also, he has not yet seen a Red Cross truck. All things are not equal in the city.

Did anyone just hear the black guy on NBC telethon? He just said that George Bush doesn't care about black people. When white people take something they are getting food...when black people take it they are looting.

I am stunned.

again, the issue at the convention center is not food and water - its medical care and evacuation.

They have just absoutely got to get the drama queen (geraldo of course) out of there. My children were wide-eyed at his performance and I had to explain that yes, he looks like an adult but he's just not quite "right".

How are things in Baton Rouge?

Shep: Things are getting better because of the National Guard and federal effort. This is an enormous challenge, and very difficult to coordinate. But there are people who are being ignored. Very disorganized.

What Geraldo is doing is tantamount to yelling fire in a crowded theater.
