President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

Karl Karl Karl, I really wish you'd quit photoshopping these pics. Obviously they were actually beating him before taking him out back and putting him into slavery. ( /sarcasm)

The MSM is so lame.

This civil rights idiot on BO - I am about to scream! Only the blacks are being called refugees? That's what he said! What about the 90 year old white lady and her daughter they just interviewed?! There ARE white people in these crowds. And really - now refugees isn't politically correct? Sheesh!

Are the entertainers bashing Bush yet?

They haven't given the hollyweird type anything to do but read their scripted notes about how much help is needed.

Thank God.

Harry Connick Jr. talking about his visit to NO, he looks very broken up.

I watched Geraldo. That Police Chief kept talking about crowd on the brink of riot.

Did you see the crowd? Perfectly peaceful, sickly and exhausted looking. I didn't see any potential riot unless of course it is whipped up.

They convert/manufacture/rebuild those in the O'Gara-Hess & Eisenhardt facility in Ohio. My guess is that they pulled off whatever they could get their hands on and sent it down there as quickly as possible.

That said, the Army is also in the process of Up-Armoring many of the Reserve, Guard, and stateside HMMVWs.

To: seamole

Thanks again seamole. I think my confusion lies mostly with just WHAT is considered military (bless you every one).

The national guard had already been in NO/LA when Miss Mary gave her speech today threatening the looters.

I've always considered the guard military until I heard her speech & was left w/ the impression that the guard isn't considered military & the army was moving in.

The individual state's national guard IS federal military isn't it?

To: AmusedBystander

let's not belittle what happened in manhattan on 9-11. no one knew if other planes were coming, manhattan has millions of people on it, people had to be evacuated, order maintained.

I'm not comparing NO to NYC, all I am saying is that imagine if Rudy and Pataki and the entire government apparatus bugged out.

To: toldyou

Yeah, but they never told anyone WHY they were underfunded:

Sierra Club environazis blocked further work.
NO refusal to pay 50% of the grant money (required by law). They wanted the feds to pay 100%.

Funny, every other state understood the terms, as laid out by Congress.

Is that a crazy idea?

Not at all. It's what I would have done WITH caveat: Those entering the dome were not allowed in with any kinds of weapons (Zero Tolerance); ergo, I'd have found some stick with long nails, and made my way out of NO. Broken glass, some toxic soup in a jug to toss into faces. Oh yeah... I'd a started walking as soon as Katrina had passed over.
