President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

see you on the threads Tuesday..have you seen any schedule for the CJ funeral?

I've seen no schedule. Pretty glued to Katrina. Not sure I'll be around much this week though, have lots of work piled up that needs to get done.

Only the Coast Guard paints their choppers that shade of red/orange - and it is a CH-53 variant, I think.

I guess, in retrospect, he should have gone on television with a public plea for people to evacuate.

From the projected paths of the storm I saw, I would have gotten out (way), and offered to take others with me. FR was full of pleas to people to get out.

At first, I was mad at myself for not warning my relatives in Purvis (just below Hattiesburg) to not go elsewhere because of the path I was seeing.

I just think the local authorities should have put much more emphasis on leaving, and utilized school buses etc. to help those who couldn't afford to leave.

But obviously all that is hindsight (20/20).

So where were the door to door folks getting everyone out, the megaphones on cars driving down streets?

Never mind, Bush was supposed to do that.

Rescue helo down!

So sad. Probably inevitable given the magnitude of the relief effort. My thoughts and prayers go out to the rescue workers, their families, and any other people.

It's not a patrol chopper, but a sea rescue chopper. The ones used for general rescue and not patrol are orange like that.

The chopper *is* empty, so everyone must have gotten out. WWL anchors say that the backup/rescue chopper that had been next to the downed chopper has left with the crew.

On an HH-65, the winch is over the door and the arm does extend.

No he did not. Joe Scarborough was questioning about the previous reports of a few days ago.

She said they weren't going back and would probably stay here. The 10 year old heard this and said, "we aren't going back to America?" Bless his heart....he has no clue where they are. His mom told him they were in Texas.....where the president lives! He was soooo happy!

Thank you very much for the stories and your service!
