President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.
The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.
The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.
Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

Those are the light scout copters that cannot pick up people (like the Miami Dade chopper that I mentioned earlier). They don't have the lift or equipment like a winch and they don't have the space to evac people. What's going on is classic military doctrine, adapted to SAR. Light scout craft locate the targets and move around quickly to locate all of them so people can plan, heavier and larger (and notably slower) craft move in to take care of them.
FEMA leased three. They are going to various locations, and more likely for relief workers than for evacuees.
Various locations, IIRC, includes Mobile, NOLA, and one other.
They're being enrolled, but they haven't entered classes yet. From what I've read, they're going to get a full set of vaccinations right before they are allowed into classes if they cannot produce records.
Will vaccinations help if they already have a disease,,,doesn them having the vaccine mean they can't spread it?? Just wondering...
Relief workers...that's gonna play well with the MSM....(s)
Condi praising state officials for doing what they need to do at the Alabama shelter. (Dig, Dig)
Now getting a question from idiot reporterette about the lack of response. Condi saying Fed response is coming and depth of the disaster is overwhelming. Again saying that locals have first responsibility til the feds arrive. Asking to pull together now -- time to evaluate faults later.
Give them the benefit of the doubt - anyone still alive and unmolested by the looters and thugs at this point would likely have been armed as well. Remember, the evac is on the condition that you give up all your weapons and that applies to the law abiding, too.
At this point, nobody in TX trusts what the LA authorities say - we've been screening refugees since day 1 anyway.
Yesterday I heard TX was also declared a disaster area by Prez in order we receive federal funds.
Will it really hurt kids to miss another week or so of school? I know as a kid, I would have liked the break...
Some schools in MS have said they won't be back in session until November
Okay, that makes sense. I was wondering why I kept hearing about the stranded folks so quickly. I figured it must be overlapping teams. So, if you're spotted and logged, about how long til the rescue might be attempted? Tomorrow?
Condi addressing the race card issue head on here. good for her. in time, CNN will try to convince their viewers that Condi is actually white.
Condi stare at reporter who asked if blacks getting shunned in the rescue operation. Says that is not true, she is African-American and it is not about race. It is all about all Americans of all colors coming together in response.
"Condi praising state officials for doing what they need to do at the Alabama shelter. (Dig, Dig) "
Whats that about? :)
Depends on the disease. For the most part, the incubation period of most diseases is long enough that giving a vaccine at this point will probably abort it.
Also, remember that the vaccinations of the other kids (mandatory, remember?) are going to protect them. Nonetheless, school nurses in TX are being provided with training and the local public health officers will keep on top of this.
We're NOT Louisiana.
Good point---and I am relieved to hear that about the incubation period
At the very least, if you've been spotted, a chopper will come over and drop supplies to you by the end of today. Most of these people will be lifted out today, few of those spotted today (if any) will be forced to wait until tonight or tomorrow. Those visibly in medical distress will be gotten to as a first priority (as no doubt you can hear over the scanners).
If I had to hazard a guess, the median time between identification and pickup is probably no more than a couple of hours in most cases, at most.
It's a lot better now that the adults are in charge.
"Condi stare at reporter who asked if blacks getting shunned in the rescue operation."
Is that the killer Condi stare? Is the reporter now a pile of smouldering ashes?
Condi: 60 countries offering support.
"Also, remember that the vaccinations of the other kids (mandatory, remember?) "
Are they routinely innoculating schoolkids for typhoid, typhus, and cholera, now?
I didn't get those shots until my inducdtion into the military, but that was many years ago.
Now RAT commentator saying that it is about the Feds not doing what was needed. Then lost the feed. LOL. Comes back and agrees locals have some responsibililty. Name is Doug Shume(?)
