President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

"Rescue workers from Vancouver, Canada, try to convince a resident of Chalmette, a community 7 miles (11 km) east of New Orleans, to evacuate his home, September 3, 2005. Rescuers from Canada are scouring the community for the first time Saturday for survivors of Hurricane Katrina which devastated the New Orleans area August 29."

Excellent. Some Canadians doing great work. I've seen a photo of a Canadian picking up stray pets too. Might be the same bunch.

"I wonder if rescuers are using/can use police and army helicopters using infra-red radar, the type that are used to pick out the heat from human beings? Our police helicopters use them to pick up the image of thieves hiding in bushes etc. I wonder if this can show if people are alive in attics?? Does anybody know if this would work through metal roofs?"

Heard a bit on CNN about the CIA (?) spy Sats. And yes they can pick up heat signatures.
But the person (a lady) didn't want to give too much info on it.

And it's true: eventually, help did come. But how many times did Gov. Kathleen Blanco have to say that the situation was desperate? How many times did Mayor Ray Nagin have to call for aid? Why did America ask a city cherished by millions and excoriated by some, but ignored by no one, to fight for its own life for so long? That's my question.

Except for that, she wrote a moving tribute to NO. Her books are great, if you like vampire stories. I do, and have purchased several different ones. I wish I had her email, because I would like to direct her to these threads. She is very misinformed about NO's official incompetence. Her question has an answer, but will she listen?

Excellent. Hope whatever technology they use (spy or not-spy) will get them quicker to those trapped in attics.

She hired Witt AGAIN?

LINK: June 3, 2004: IEM Team to Develop Catastrophic Hurricane Disaster Plan for New Orleans & Southeast Louisiana
Excerpt:
IEM, Inc., the Baton Rouge-based emergency management and homeland security consultant, will lead the development of a catastrophic hurricane disaster plan for Southeast Louisiana and the City of New Orleans under a more than half a million dollar contract with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security/Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). In making the announcement today on behalf of teaming partners Dewberry, URS Corporation and James Lee Witt Associates, IEM Director of Homeland Security Wayne Thomas explained that the development of a base catastrophic hurricane disaster plan has urgency due to the recent start of the annual hurricane season which runs through November. National weather experts are predicting an above normal Atlantic hurricane season with six to eight hurricanes, of which three could be categorized as major.

As was said on the other thread, that 500,000 hurricane evac plan didn't work out too well. So their response is to RE-HIRE him??

How can they not refund the tickets? I'm sure considerations will be made for next season, but will the Saints use this opportunity to set up in Los Angeles permanently?

Mexico keeps 10 days worth of provisions in it's emergency hurricane shelters. MEXICO! We should adopt those standards as the folks in NO were told to bring their own supplies.

Could people still be actually on roofs? With the amount of choppers in the air (media, medical, searchandrescue), how could this be? And with the glut of choppers, why not post a five hundred cash reward for every person brought in?

"will get them quicker to those trapped in attics"

Shaking my ole head here and laughing a sick laugh of dispair.

They can get precription meds to some NG in less than 12hrs (he/she) forgot to bring enough BP meds before being deployed), but they can't with all the high tech stuff that BB has now, to be able to rescue and feed and medicate and transport out of there in over 120hrs? (5 days)

I'm just at a lost for words.
Heard (not confirmed, but maybe never will be, due to the news black-out) that several babies Died in the S-Dome while waiting to be evac'd out due to HEat Stroke, no fluids, nothing to keep them cool.

Tell her to get gas before she gets to Baton Rouge as supplies are very limited. We fueled up in Jennings (at the Wal-mart) yesterday and made it here fine.

Supposedly, they were all closed before the storm hit because the winds exceeded safety limits.

That said, and given the now-obvious inability of LA authorities, there probably were people on them when they were destroyed.

I didn't see all of it as our local TV Baton Rouge) just has Katrina coverage. Here is what I posted earlier...
2. Mary Landrieu is going to be on with George Stephenoplous this morning. They showed part of the interview. She and George are flying over New Orleans and she points to a bridge that is out. There is a BACKHOE working and she goes on and on about there only being one CRANE (it actually is a backhoe) working on the bridge and how the president needs to send help. She says the word crane no less than 10 times. Amazing to me as there are still possible people to rescue and she is wanting to rebuild immediately.

But, there is another thread about the part I missed. She actually said if she saw President Bush, she would "punch him"!! Unbelievable!!
