President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.
The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.
The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.
Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WWL-TV New Orleans (via WFAA Dallas) - WWL-TV is operating from studios at Louisiana Public Broadcasting. CBS has a relay during the morning and afternoon. When available, use the CBS relay first as they have greater streaming capacity. Yahoo has also provided a relay.
WDSU-TV New Orleans - The news staff has started to return to temporary news studios near New Orleans. However, expect evening coverage from Hearst-Argyle sister stations WAPT Jackson and WESH Orlando when the New Orleans staff needs to take a break.
WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.
WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.
WKRG-TV Mobile, AL - This station is providing good coverage of the situation to the east in Mississippi and Alabama. However, the station is now signing off at around 10:30pm CDT like WWL and WPMI.
WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).
United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

My only serious disappointment with him (for this disater, I have other disappointments) was the more or less congratulatory tone of the pressers early last week. That tone changed to an appropriate tone on Friday.

One thing of note- nearly everything coming into the city has to have an armed escort. Police, military, whatever. Those looters and snipers have caused a lot of resources to be diverted.
Interestingly, Fox has been interviewing people at the Astrodome. One doctor said that many of these people have not been seen by a doctor in YEARS, if ever. They are dealing with hypertension, congestive heart failure, diabetics, etc. Doctor on now saying they need insulin and congestive heart failure meds.
Seems to me we also are seeing evidence of a complete failure of the New Orleans public health system.
Fox commentator said in some ways the peope in the Astrodome are BETTER OFF, because they are finally getting medical care!

I would say that NO public health was never very good...but you also have to have people willing to use it, too...back in the days when I had to take advantage of it (a down and out period between the end of college and the start of teaching), I would go to clinics at Charity Hospital. They had morning appointments and afternoon appointments. You'd have to get there at 8:30 in the morning and wait until your number was called. It might be two hours before it was your turn. But if you didn't get there early enough, you would have an extremely high number, and it would be 3 hours before you saw anybody.
Now I will admit that this was back in '87. But I can understand why people didn't necessarily want to go to clinics unless they had a critical problem.

Were aircraft flying over the areas? It is possible to use a piece of metal (like roof flashing-has to be shiny though-a piece of broken glass or a mirror would work), and flash an SOS at passing planes, helicopters, etc. I think it's "long, short, long".
I know that is the last thing people would think of in this kind of situation, but I'm going to remember it.

Speakiing of Help, last night in Pontiac Michigan, was the ARTS BEATS and EATS festival. The music Group "Better than Ezra" performed. They are from New Orleans. They urged the crowd to go home after the concert and make a donation. They talked and sang a few songs they wrote about NO. Then the Events promoter came on after their set and announced that the Group donated their performance fee to a relief fund.
Not one word about Bush or Govs or mistakes or finger pointing.

Emergency officials in Louisiana say they are still getting calls from people trapped and in need of rescue. Officials say they received about 1,000 such calls on Saturday, with some people saying they are still trapped in their attics. Authorities are using color-coded maps to locate anyone in need of rescue. They plan to go door-to-door if they have to, in order to find all remaining survivors."
I wonder if rescuers are using/can use police and army helicopters using infra-red radar, the type that are used to pick out the heat from human beings? Our police helicopters use them to pick up the image of thieves hiding in bushes etc. I wonder if this can show if people are alive in attics?? Does anybody know if this would work through metal roofs?
