President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WDSU-TV New Orleans - The news staff has started to return to temporary news studios near New Orleans. However, expect evening coverage from Hearst-Argyle sister stations WAPT Jackson and WESH Orlando when the New Orleans staff needs to take a break.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

It's not just you; downtown in NO, they looted places and then set them on fire.

Somebody ought to be on the lookout for a big truck carrying luxury items.

It would be interesting to see them plotted on a map, though, wouldn't it?

The media can freely move in and out of the city. The Fox liar must have said something likely to be taken as the reporter hadn't left the city at all in the past week. They leave every night, and come back every morning.

You are exhibiting exactly HOW MUCH you don't know about CA.

What available shelters? The illegal immigration problem is so vast, so widespread -- coupled with shrinking budgets?

BUT MAYBE... the San Francisco Big Mucka Mucks who took over the SF Presidio, years ago, would give up their location in order to house the evacuees. I really wish some MSM would call Barbara Boxer up and ask her. ;>

Interesting -- then during a hurricane one recourse could be to emplace baffles of some sort in the canal.

How, exactly, is that disturbing? It's *exactly* what you're supposed to do when civilization fails. Fall back, band together, create a set of rules, help each other, rebuild/escape/whatever.

Oh, wait, it's disturbing because these people actually did for themselves, and the idiot LibDems don't want anyone doing that, right?

If you check out the Flood of 1927 you'll see that's what happened then. Up until then Blacks were predominately southern and Republican. The flood caused a massive black migration north. Hoover was elected on promises to fix their plight and found he did not have the resources he promised. The black community turned it's allegiance almost entirely to democRats ever since.

Are Jesse Jacksson & Al Sharpton afraid they'll switch back after this mess "caused" by the Dems? I probably shouldn't say caused. The city, built in 1719, shouldn't have been built on a swamp in the first place...blame the French.

Finally some video on WLL of the efforts to fix the breach in the levee. I'm wondering why we haven't seen much of this effort on TV?

Is it just me being curious by nature, or does anyone else find it somewhat 'suspicious' that all these fires are breaking out around NO

Heard on WWL that the police were asked about one of the fires...they said they chased people out of the building as firefighters arrived and "they didn't look like sales clerks."

isn't it about time we looked a just WHO the "media" is: a bunch of over-educated, under-experienced, locked-in-their-ivory-tower JERKS.

Most wouldn't know HOW to investigate, or even where to start, other than with their conclusion that meets their own agenda. The rest of the story would lead, inevitably, to that pre-set conclusion.

For instance .. let's look at Helen THomas's buttboy at the White House, the little wuss Terry Moran. Or David Gregory. Any of them. What qualifies THEM to question so arrogantly what President Bush has done? Where did they go to school? Where have they lived? What are their life experiences outside the White House and/or pressrooms? Who do they socialize with? are they married, and to whom? Have any of them ever started and/or run a company? Met a payroll? To what charities do they contribute, and how much? Same for politicians .. to whom do they contribute and how much ... or do they contribute through their wives, lovers, friends and/or child(ren) ? What private clubs do they belong to? And what private schools do they send their children to? I really want to know WHO these people are who pontificate and act as if we are supposed to believe them.

The problem is that the winds and waves have to be at just the right angle for that to happen. (shrug) Just really bad luck. Of course, if they'd put lock doors on both ends and shut them, that *might* have helped.
