President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

The Governor of CA is doing his best to keep the CA Democrats from sinking CALIFORNIA, as seems their plan. If CA sinks, economically, and as it comprises 1/7th of the economy (echo: HillaryCare); it will drag down every state's economy. He's doing as much as he can to hold the state as "steady" as he can, but the Dems in CA are worse than those in NO, IME.

But the National Guard is Bush's fault

Excuse me? He can't order them to go until the LA Gov ASKS for help. Didn't you learn much about the checks and balances of power between the various arms of the US Government? She never asked. President Bush got them ready, anyway.

Who many evacuees is CA taking? CA is what, about twice the size of Texas?

I have no idea. Have you ever checked out and compared the populations of those two states? Not comparable in re "available" economy. Dems have been sinking the state of CA for many years. And perhaps you are suggesting a piling on of more citizens to drain the near non-existent budget, would SHOW what a "compassionate" state is CA?

lol.. "Hello, Reality Check Here!"

You must be smokin' too much of that medicinal marijuana to think CA has anything in that is bigger than Texas.

The level of care owed invited guests and legal visitors varies by statute or case law history from state to state, most of it is based on the hornbook or common law we inheritied from England, or in the singular case of Louisiana, from the Napoleanic code of France. In all, as best I understand, it favors the invitied guest most highly, followed by the visitor. No I do not have cites. You can research them and counter me to the points I make if you will or can -- and that will be a good education for you.

That would be the generous assessment. :-)

But the only way that guy could be correct is if attempted to leave before the hurricane, and if he had, he wouldn't be there.

I don't understand why she would have to hire Witt. That only proves even more that she can't handle responsiblity. What a moron...

#####

I am betting that behind the scenes some one in today's FEMA/Homeland Security said "Can someone find out what Jamie Witt is doing, and if he can clear his schedule for the next few months. Gov Blank-o is clearly out of her depth [stupid pun, I know] We need to get someone in LA that we can work with."

If you check out the Flood of 1927 you'll see that's what happened then. Up until then Blacks were predominately southern and Republican. The flood caused a massive black migration north. Hoover was elected on promises to fix their plight and found he did not have the resources he promised. The black community turned it's allegiance almost entirely to democRats ever since.

Yep, and very few people know that even though it was a huge event that has reverberated through the decades.

Unfortunately, we don't see enough interviews with the "refugees" that do understand what their situation is...and are making the best of it...

What is really maddening is that a hurricane is color-blind. It doesn't distinguish between skin color, income or anything...

and these groups that are making these statements are hurting the very people they claim to be "helping".

Did you hear the phone call just on MSNBC from the lady who was just rescued today from Slidell?

It was very disturbing. (At least it will be for a lot of people when we start hearing MORE of these stories.)

The people banned together, went to a mall, lived out of the food court, formed a "semi-government/town," had rules, policed themselves. Saved themselves.

Quite unlike what happened in the SuperDome/Convention Center.

"yes, but those 2000 people at the superdome are new arrivals there, not part of the original set. the convention center needed the evac for sure."

Yeah, I'm not arguing that point, although the suspension of Superdome pickups caused somewhat of a flap this morning.

My point was that the helicopter pickups at a land-accessible place might be due to a lack of dedicated people-moving assets.

How about CA has much more average personal income, population, and empty shelters.

Hey, we could use a little help here!

Someone on FOX lying about trying to leave the city for 7-8 days.

They would have had a different life today if they actually had been trying to leave the city 7-8 days ago.
