Katrina Live Thread, Part XIV

Posted on 09/02/2005 3:03:06 PM PDT by NautiNurse

President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

Amen to that!

Just logging on this morning. To long a thread to read it all, what's the latest in a line or two?

Thanks :)

Wow--God bless our military! I was just watching--tears flowing down my face. It's so easy to focus on the negative--but those people at the Convention Center have been through hell, and now our nation's finest are on the job.

Yesterday I felt so overwhelmed by the tragedy of Katrina, and I sought comfort from Him who gives us true Comfort. And my Bible opened to 1Corinthians 13--and read the Apostle Paul's beautiful definition of what true Love is:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keep no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. LOVE NEVER FAILS!

What Heraldo just reported on shows our nation at its best and finest: giving hope and comfort to those who so desperately need it. God bless our President--who understands the words of Paul so well--and God bless our military!

I'd like to see footage today of them getting food, water and information. I haven't seen it yet and I want to - I watched this everyday, every channel.

The footage today is of them being airlifted out! Hallelujah!

I'm off to the lake to take the kids swimming. Feeling a little better now, seeing what I did, and I am greatful for that.

Of course the tragedy is overwhelming... and yes reality hurts. But even a tragedy the scope of this one has some "good news" as it were - and I don't think enough of it is being covered. Yes there are people dead and dying.. however MANY survived and that is not being covered enough.

No shootings at rescuers in the last 48 hours.

then we should expect to see the Red Cross moving in - this was their excuse last night.

This is unconfirmed, so it could be a rumor. I hope it isnt true. Just FYI. If any one can confirm please do.

"Let Dennis Prager invite them in his home.

Maybe he should check with the Monroe, Louisiana family who took in a few evacuees from Katrina. They gave them a safe place to sleep, showers, hot food, clean clothes, etc. The thanks they got...they were murdered in their sleep."

"I just heard about it today from some nurses from that area. I have been trying to find an article about it but I haven't seen anything so far."

its improving significantly today, even CNN is upbeat right now in their coverage (as shocking as that is to believe, I know it won't last, but I'll take it for now).

Bush needs to give a daily update to the american people on this - just like he did this morning with the televised radio address. we need to move on the PR side as well.

The NG troops that showed up with relief supplies yesterday said they had been driving for days to get to NO. Unless they show up with what is on their back, it truly takes time. But, I knew yesterday, that people were going to suggest this other possibility. I think it hurts the President not to put it into perspective.

Yeah, but it doesn't take these Chinooks days to show up (perhaps the staging areas weren't ready until today, though). My comment certainly wasn't intended to hurt the president; rather, I was trying to underscore the power of this man (and to a lesser extent his office) to get things done rapidly.

I've been told that the mayor and his staff and policemen were staying at that hotel and were evacuated ahead of Super Dome people. I will try to find a link and post it.

In my mind, it is unconscionable to remove anyone from a safe, dry location ahead of people who were lying in urine with no food or water and in a place where there were rapes of infants and women and murders.

God bless you for all you have done to give comfort to so many in your home. Have you heard data on the number of displaced currently sheltered in Baton Rouge?

Most of the NG units providing aid were deployed without weapons - and their vehicles won't go over about 55mph, so police and their cruisers are needed to escort the buses.

There are a LOT more armed NG units in there now, but they're busy suppressing looters.

Agree. Bush did what he said he would. Take what works and implement changes. FEMA Director detailing how the dead will be id'd.

Corps Gen. already talking about debris removal, temporary roofing, dewatering NOLA. Bringing in pumps to supplement existing pumps.

"Yeah, perhaps they were already mobilizing prior to yesterday's visit. My thought was that Bush saw the disarray on the ground and really "motivated" some folks to get their butts in gear."

My take on it is that the guys-on-the-ground were already working their butts off to make this happen.

The only people that needed "motivated" were the politicians and others doing the whining/carping/complaining instead of helping.

After the presser in NO yesterday, Nagin and the governor looked like whipped puppies. I suspect the President chewed their @sses. The hand shaking after the speech was very short and cool. He didn't even look them in the eye. You could tell he is totally disgusted. By contrast, he had nothing but good things to say about Haley Barbour and the mayor of Biloxi, they are the REAL leaders.

Bush kicked some *ss and this is the result

I agree with that. He had some serious failures below him beginning at the local level, then state and even some fumbling in his own administration. You could tell he was concerned about this before the storm even made landfall. He's had to take one step at a time all the way down and up the food chain to get things moving.
