President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WWL-TV New Orleans (via WFAA Dallas) - WWL-TV is operating from studios at Louisiana Public Broadcasting. CBS has a relay during the morning and afternoon. When available, use the CBS relay first as they have greater streaming capacity. Yahoo has also provided a relay.

WDSU-TV New Orleans - The news staff has started to return to temporary news studios near New Orleans. However, expect evening coverage from Hearst-Argyle sister stations WAPT Jackson and WESH Orlando when the New Orleans staff needs to take a break.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WKRG-TV Mobile, AL - This station is providing good coverage of the situation to the east in Mississippi and Alabama. However, the station is now signing off at around 10:30pm CDT like WWL and WPMI.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

That is a good point..The men can help clean up etc...They can eat as they serve. They can give them brooms and let them sweep, after they take care of their needs too.

There were snipers shooting at cops trying to stop people from breaking into jewelry stores as well. And, the boats arriving have been shot at. It is a problem. Not major. But it is keeping folks like the Red Cross from coming in.

She really needs a smaller gun (that packs a punch though) that can fit better into a small hand. Any ideas?

The .357/.38 combo is good - there are lots of guns chambered for .357, and any of those will shoot .38. The caliber is good because the two weapons can share ammo.

There is a trade off between size of gun and perceived recoil. Lighter guns tend to kick more, of feel more harsh. The best advice is to try before you buy. The shooter needs to be comfortable with the gun. .22 is useless, unless you want to use it to bag small critters to eat. Well, a .22 is great for general practice, ammo is real cheap ;-)

My personal favorite is .45 auto on a "Lightweight Combat Commander" frame. I have small hands too, and it (the weapon) is quite easy to manage - takes lots of practice to get proficient.

You see vermin on those Hwys waiting for help, I see people. that's the difference

No... I see vermin shooting at the people coming to rescue the people on those highways. You and I aren't talking about the same people.

You just don't see the vermin. That's the difference.

Maybe more gas availability will be the first step in other things getting "fixed"...

God Bless you.

a true journalist would have found a way to help those folks without keep shouting no one is helping them.

I agree and I certainly would have tried to do it. And, no, Fox hasn't done it. But, the fact is: neither has anyone else.

**Why aren't NG guys over there helping them yet?**

Because the CAMERAS are in New Orleans..

They are raising such a ruckus there, that i'm betting there are no assets to spare for anywhere else..

A little off topic, but am I alone in despising Sheppard Smith?

No, you're not alone. Well, despise is a pretty harsh word...but I'm not a fan. Haven't been for quite awhile. This afternoon and tonight just reinforced my beliefs.

I (gack) listened to NPR for 15 minutes in the car today (just about the only station with news that I can get - mea culpa!) and some FREAKING IDIOT commentator (didn't get his name) was race baiting like I have never heard.

That the "rich white Dixiecrats" {his exact words) escaped from NOLA while all the black brothers and sisters were bascially forced to stay - basically saying that someone (who?) was forcing the black people of NOLA to stay and die. He sounded so angry and admitted he was trembling in rage. He sounded as though he was about to need a strait jacket.

Leftists are worse than mentally ill.

Maybe the Police Chief has not been in communication with the Convention Center & doesn't have a clue what the conditions are there.

He was standing at the Convention Center site and making those assertions. Makes him a liar, sounds like. And those in charge of delivering supplies will know that.

There is another way bloggers and other thoughtful people can help: I have opened forums at www.DisasterReliefIdeas.org for the discussion of ideas to aid disaster relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I am not soliciting donations, only ideas. Experts in aspects of disaster relief (housing, healthcare, rebuilding, etc.) are also able to rate these ideas, giving us a means of identifying the most promising ones, which will be shared with disaster relief professionals and persons in authority. Please help our society by contributing your ideas, especially if you are unable to contribute financially to relief efforts.

Streaming update (I've been getting them from WWL):

WWL has added an audio-only feed of their TV broadcasts for low bandwidth/dial-up users.

All information is subject to change. Many stations are relying on their corporate parents to configure and maintain Internet streaming. Because of the intense interest in the feeds, they may be unavailable at times because of network congestion or a problem feeding the video to the streaming servers.

WWL-TV New Orleans - WWL-TV is operating from studios at Louisiana Public Broadcasting. CBS has a relay during the morning and afternoon. When available, use the CBS relay first as they have greater streaming capacity.

WFAA-TV Dallas, TX - I have added this feed (and will be adding some others) from WFAA-TV because it is one of the evacuation cities. I will begin compiling links for the major evacuation locations for those who need to follow what's going on in those areas.

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

Gulf Coast Storm Network (Clear Channel Radio) - Clear Channel offers radio listeners across the gulf coast access to a simulcast emergency radio service. This service seems primarily focused on Alabama and Mississippi, but does cover Louisiana to some degree.

New Orleans Police Department & National Guard Operations: Several volunteers are pitching in to help relay these "scanner broadcasts." You can now listen for extended periods of time. The service now also includes broadcasts from the National Guard operating in southern Louisiana.

Gulf Coast ARES Emergency Network: These are amateur radio operators providing assistance and coordination via high frequency (shortwave) links. The audio feed for this will be subject to interference and sound anomalies due to the transmission mode and frequency.

I think what's happening is that as some people are bused off, more come in to take their place.

That's what I heard; that as the days passed and some other areas dried up, those people came to take the places of the ones who had been there in the beginning. I remember the reporter kept saying "They just keep appearing."
