President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

Well, my fellow human, I share your feelings. I feel so utterly helpless. Sometimes I have to turn off the tv so I can quit crying for a little while. This is just such a tragedy. I don't think I've fully absorbed it yet.

the way I see it... the shape of Texas on the map should be changed into a great big heart!

God Bless Texas - My husband and I vacation in Texas a few years back - It was a great time and we will be back in Texas for our next vacation!

And Cajungirl - We will also be back in Louisiana in the future on vacation!

Hi chuknospam, I'm only posting this hear because here is where I am. The information found in the following link comes cirectly from the Whitehouse. Quote: "The President today declared an emergency exists in the State of Louisiana and ordered Federal aid to supplement state and local response efforts in the parishes located in the path of Hurricane Katrina beginning on August 26, 2005, and continuing." Our President was more involved and on the ball than some give him credit for. The Governor of Louisiana may have NOT ordered an evacuation if it hadn't been for the President of the United States, George W. Bush.

Geraldo, well he's just being Geraldo.

Shep even had to tell BOR, "hey... you want an eyewitness report from the area... I'm just telling you what I'm seeing." Geraldo was being Geraldo, but the same people are in the same fix now, begging for help for their dying babies and elderly. Steve Harrigan was around the same misery. All three reported the same innaction and BOR callously dismissed them all.... reported on Aruba shortly after.

Greta is in a clean and sanitary spot so she can afford to be "professional". She is far removed from the stench and despair of the Convention Center. She is a little too detached for my taste. She can go from the scene right to her 4 **** hotel.

Orlando Salinas, Harrigan, and others are sleeping in their vehicles by the side of the road. Shep looks like he hasn't slept well in days.

The one who will receive awards for his reporting on this immense tragedy is Shepard Smith.

Anderson Cooper has been melting down this week, too and there was a woman with him from CNN yesterday that burst into tears because she couldn't help and Joe Scarborough was pretty close to melt down yesterday.

I saw an interview this morning with the National Guard who had been twice to Iraq. They said they had never, ever, seen anything this bad.

I'm not sure what to make of that letter. I'm certainly no expert on disaster relief....when was the letter sent? was it timely? was it enough? I honestly don't know.....but I see her getting lots of criticism so I'm wondering what is thought about this letter -aside from the strangely self-involved tone.

"The press disgusts me. They simply do not have the intelligence to understand this disaster and report on it in a responsible manner."

Very well said, and I think that we should be writing to them and telling them so.
They are creating more trouble.

OMG!
She wants people to send cash to the LA Governor's trust?
Is she insane?
What the hell is she doing?
Trying to cover up the theft of funds?

I was just listening to Aaron Brown on CCN interviewing Congressman Tubbs from Cleveland. Aaron Brown in question after leading question, was trying to extract from Tubbs' lips, that this whole thing was about race, and if white folks had been involved, this cluster would have all been different. Tubbs by and large was not taking the bait, for which I salute her.

I have never watched Brown before, but I have formed a rather fixed opinion of him after one rather toxic exposure. Brown is a race baiter, a racial ambulance chaser, who happens to be white, and a disgusting and nauseating human being. I just thought I would share. Spread the word.

You wrote: "NO was a cess pool."

Then you wrote: "I stand by my comment. It was full of wickedness. Doesn't mean there weren't good people there. But there was a LOT of evil there as well."

I am replying ONLY because I am tired not because I like or dislike you.
I am just trying to follow your LOGIC.

NO has people
NO has good people
NO has bad people
NO has evil people
since that can be extended to any place....

this is what I hear you 'saying':

the world is full of wickedness
thus the world is a cesspool

my 2 cents

I saw a segment on C-SPAN of Laura Bush answering questions at a center for evacuees in Lafayette, LA. She was superb, an excellent advertisement for Texas.

One problem with that. Shep was lieing. Yeah, its a pretty strong word, but I'm tired of his grandstanding. He hasn't been honest since sometime on Monday.

That's the convention center parking lot, according to the caption that was attached to it. That's National Guard toops. That's a lot of food and water. Those people are not being ignored, they are being taken care of.

I think that was Jeff Goldblatt--he is now in TX. I also think he was shot at on Weds.night.
