Dying Pets Break the Hearts of Helpless Rescuers...Please Help the Truly Helpless

September 2, 2005 -- Thousands of abandoned pets are on the brink of drowning or dying of thirst as a result of Hurricane Katrina, and many more are feared dead, animal-rescue groups said yesterday. Despite very limited access to evacuated areas, rescue efforts have begun, with teams from FEMA, Noah's Wish and the Humane Society racing against time.

Many people who ended up in shelters were forced to leave their pets behind because the Red Cross and the Louisiana Superdome don't allow animals.

"I'm guessing we're going to have tens of thousands of animals affected," said Dick Green, manager of animal emergency services for the American Humane Association. "There are literally thousands of animals in New Orleans alone stuck in homes . . . going without water. They don't have food. Every day that goes on, the situation worsens."

For example, all sales of luxury items in this country could be halted, and people could be FORCED to send money that would otherwise be spent as they see fit to New Orleans.

That is happening. It's called taxes.

Any recognition of the fact that maybe these organizations are better equipped to help animals?

Well, in a state of emergency, anyone expending resources on rescuing animals when people are in danger should be prosecuted.

A bit hysterical, I see. I can foresee circumstances where I would save my animals over some people. It's a decision I would have to live with.

I applaud the efforts of those rescuing pets. If I could be down there with them, I would be.

I found a post on a Yahoo Group about an animal rescue group in New Orleans that is operational now. But communications are so poor, that they're having trouble getting the word out that they are able to house pets. And they may not have any way of knowing about pets being confiscated as people board buses to Texas.

Are you down there helping? Should we force you to do so? If not, can it.

Bump.

Tell ya what, jack, donate all you want, and more power too you.

However, I'll stand by my statement: If ONE human being dies because some moonbat saves a dog or cat instead of the human, they should be charged with murder.

To advocate rescuing animals at this point is criminal behavior that is as bad as those shooting and looting.

Thanks, I needed a good laugh.

I would hardly equate taxes with the president announcing today that the sale of all luxury items in this country has been halted.

This is a free country. We don't conscript people, to force them to expend their energy and resources on things that OTHER people think they should do.

So, you don't support the draft? You don't support the police to have the power to commandeer your vehicle?

Stop thinking that this situation is an everyday occurence and start realizing that it is a human crisis of massive proportions that requires the conscripting of manpower and equipment to assist.

I understand that. We all understand that. No ONE who wants to help out in any way down there should be discouraged. The need is bigger than we've ever seen before.

There is a lot of anger all over this forum, toward other FReepers, toward anyone they can lash out at and blame for the suffering. If the images of human suffering are hard to take, finding this forum full of mean-spirited sniping is of absolutely no relief. Everyone is on edge, and I for one am tired of engaging people who are cruising the forum looking for someone to take their anger out on.

You see something that needs done? DO IT. Stop taking out your state of angst about this disaster on other FReepers.

I can't take credit for an idea that isn't mine. It's shhrubbery who thought about it that way.

Shut yer pie hole, Nazi. People in this country are free to spend their money however they wish.

Ah, the open-minded animal lover.

Repeat: I never criticized donating money.

Under what statute? And what jury would convict a person who did this?

There are a disturbing number of people who post here who seem to equate a love for pets and animals with liberalism.

Bump.
